This weekend, I was blessed to attend Gaia Gathering — an impactful gathering of healers from all walks of life. I was surrounded by many modalities of healing from a variety of cultures: artists, medicine men and women, yogis, energy healers, and spiritualists. As someone who heals companies and leaders through communication, I felt right at home. The messages rang through loud and clear and you will see many of my a-ha moments translated into my column here.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Arts Council announced Friday the awarding of more than $1 million in statewide grants to 172 recipients ranging from individual artists to nonprofit organizations and public institutions for the 2020 fiscal year.

Carson City Department of Arts & Culture has announced a new Summer Artist Lecture Series here in Carson City. A game-changing collaboration with Resident Artist Program in Silver City Nevada and Buffalo Creek Art Center Inc!

Our first guests on Thursday July 11th (5-630pm) will be Russ Connell from Dallas, TX and Claire Scully from London, UK. Each artist will be presenting for 45 minutes- free to the public!

Heading into Monday, July 8, 2019 we want to give a big shout out to all the local organizations and agencies that made this Fourth of July weekend around the Carson City region one to remember. For Monday we're looking at a number of events including a basketball camp at the MAC, a children's theater camp, a local talk with the Carson City Airport manager, art activities, line dancing and more.

I have been described as fiercely independent. For years, I have forged my own path — proudly so. I’d tap by feet along to anthems for independent women and cheer myself on. My independence became a badge of honor. And why shouldn’t it be? It was hard one. In some ways, I had to battle for it. But being solo also had a side effect, I struggled in asking for help. “I can do it” became a mantra for me. When I had a short fall, I would hide it instead of asking for support. In business, you see it happening as siloing.

As we go forward and move ahead into Tuesday, July 2, 2019 we're looking at another sunny day, all the better as we prepare to celebrate Independence Day. Are you ready for July 4 fireworks at Mills Park? As a Tuesday warmup, get the heart pumping during Muscle Powered's three fitness outings. Plus there's art showings, hands-on science activities in Silver City, an evening archery shoot, a viewing of the 1953 film "From Here to Eternity" at the Brewery Arts Center hosted by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club and more. Heading into Monday, the first day of July 2019 we leave an action-packed weekend behind us with a long Independence Day holiday week ahead. The activities continue, albeit at a slower place for the first day of the work week. There's art showings and activities for adults and kids, a My Place Hotels job fair, a talk featuring the program director at Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, a swing dance class and more. Heading into Thursday, June 27, 2019, there's plenty to do and see around the Carson City area as we march toward an action-packed weekend. There's a morning Muscle Powered walk, Food Truck Thursday at Mills Park, a Farmers Market in Dayton, a discussion on climate change at Western Nevada College, a history presentation on Chinese woodcutters at the Nevada State Museum, a presentation by the NNDA Executive Director at a GOP monthly meeting, Cruise Night at Wing Stop, an information meeting on the Ross Gold Park master plan hosted by Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space. With a windy cool down headed our way, activities around the Carson City area Wednesday, June 26 will make for a breezy good time. Looking at the day ahead there's a walk hosted by parks and recreation, kids events, Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center, a free "rough cut" feature film screening at the Carson Nugget, Young Chautauquans at Dangberg Historic Park and more.

Once I heard someone say, “expectations are pre-meditated resentments.” I used to LOVE that statement. I proceeded to throw my expectations out the window and delight in what I got. Unfortunately, what I got was all over the place. It was unfocused. It was sometimes unacceptable.

As we set our radar ahead to Tuesday, June 25, 2019, we say hello Carson City and welcome to a bevy of events ahead including activities for children of all ages, a Muscle Powered morning walk, evening hike and bike ride, a cyber security awareness workshop hosted by DeBug Computer, a job fair at the Carson Nugget, art showings, a delicious taste of France via Bleu Café Culinary Travelers Club and more. Heading into Monday, June 24, 2019 the first day of the work week and we say welcome to summer, Carson City. Expect highs in the mid-80s. Get on out there and keep the blood pumping and oxygen flowing with an early morning walk or bike ride. Heading into Tuesday, June 18, 2019 we're looking at continued warming around the region with a daytime high around 91. Temperatures are expected to actually lower toward the end of the week. Events around town Tuesday include a Muscle Powered walk, hike and bike ride, yoga, exercises for the mind and body hosted by the Carson City Emblem Club, political gatherings, art activities and more.

Carson City is getting better at preserving its history after losing some of its most iconic structures to neglect and disuse. Think the V&T Roundhouse and Children’s Home, though there were many more historic structures that met the wrecking ball ultimately changing how Carson Street looks today.

Changes in the climate and environment are contributing to an increased risk of wildfires in NV Energy’s service territory. In response to these changes, and to help protect our customers, equipment and environment from wildfires and extreme weather, NV Energy is implementing a number of measures which include, for the first time, Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM).

CARSON CITY — Lane reductions will take place on U.S. 50 in Dayton Saturday, June 15 as the Nevada Department of Transportation installs pedestrian safety improvements.

In a last minute announcement, Carson City based non-profit Food For Thought, Inc. will continue the Summer Lunch Program during the 2019 season. The program provides free and nutritious lunches to all children under 18.

Single lane closures will take place on South Stewart Street in Carson City this Saturday, June 15 as the Nevada Department of Transportation resurfaces the roadway as part of a project to install pedestrian safety improvements.

Each June, the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recognizes quality of life, community and economic growth achievements.

At the Chamber annual meeting on June 13, Chamber Chairman of the Board Robert Fredlund will honor seven individuals or businesses that personify what Mayor Robert Crowell is so often proud to state, “Carson City is a great place to live, work, and play.”

On Thursday at the Chamber's Annual Meeting, we welcome Lisa Lee as the 2019-2020 Chairman of the Board. She will be handed the gavel from current Chair Bob Fredlund as he moves to the Past President Position.

Kris Wells of AT&T moves from the board to the Executive Committee to take over as secretary/treasurer. All others move up one notch.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held Thursday, June 6, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

To be discussed are funding, contract purchases, grants, special event costs, and more.

A Grand Opening was held Wednesday evening for the new Prominence Care Center in Carson City, presented by Prominence Health Plan in partnership with Vera Whole Health.

The new facility opened at 180 E Winnie Lane in Carson City, and it is accessible to plan members through the Carson City School District, as well as Prominence Medicare Advantage Members.

On May 11th the Kiwanis Club of Sierra Nevada completed their first Adopt-A-Trail clean-up at Carson River Park.

The group walked from the parking lot to the fishing pier, focusing on micro trash along the trail and in the parking lot.

They picked up 23 pounds of trash. The Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space department would like to thank the Kiwanis Club of Sierra Nevada for participating in the Adopt-A-Trail program and completing their first clean-up!

Having attended Al Gore's three-day Climate Reality Leadership Corps training, Lori is well prepared to lay out the realities of climate change and its long-term environmental consequences.
