Margaret Susan Mitchell, nee Griffin, passed peacefully at her home in Carson City on May 26, 2020 following a lengthy illness. She was born in Pasadena, California on February 3, 1952 to Richard D. Griffin Sr and Helen Ruth Joy Griffin. The family moved to Reno in 1959 when Margaret’s father was stationed at Stead Air Force Base.

Hello Carson City! It has been a while since we’ve had a Pet of the Week, which isn’t necessarily bad! Our shelters have been relatively empty thanks to the shutdown.

However, we have a special boy to introduce you to today. Meet Capone!

Carson City Public Works Streets Supervisor Justin Tiearney participated in a duckling rescue operation Thursday. Around 10 a.m., a Carson City resident called in a report to the Nevada Humane Society concerning baby ducklings in a neighborhood storm drain.

The Nevada Humane Society branches in Carson City and Reno are offering a no-cost drive-through dog and cat food assistance program for pet owners in need.

UPDATE: According to Animal Control Officer Stephanie Baeta, the dog is safely in custody at the Carson City Humane Society.

What was relayed to Officer Baeta by the shepherds is that the dog attacked the sheep, and the presumed owner of the dog attempted to pull the dog away, at which point the dog attempted to bite the owner, so the owner abandoned the dog on the scene. The shepherds were left to contain the dog, and animal control arrived on scene shortly after.

The dog, who Officer Baeta reports has been very gentle and sweet with animal control staff, is in a ten day bite quarantine. If no owner comes forward to claim the dog after ten days, it will become property of the humane society and they will be evaluated for adoption.

She also said they were able to save one lamb following the attack.

Two ewes (mother sheep) and four baby lambs were killed Thursday after an unleashed dog attacked the herd of firefighting sheep that are currently working their way through Carson City's foothills mowing down cheat grass.

While many things have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 shut down, which has essentially ground our normal daily lives to a halt, one thing that it has affected positively have been homeless animals.

Are you looking for a way to help Nevada Humane Society save more lives? One of the most effective ways to help animals directly is to become a foster.

At this time while the state is under quarantine orders and people are starting to feel more and more stir crazy, the perfect cure is a simple one: fostering animals.

According to the Nevada Humane Society, no experience is needed to become a foster care volunteer. The most important factor a volunteer can have is a loving, safe home.

The Nevada Humane Society's shelters in Carson City and Reno are currently open and fully operational. Our primary goal right now is to reduce the number of animals housed at our shelters in an effort to avoid overcrowding should we need to restrict our services or close altogether.

Rumors about a potential outbreak of dog lice in two Carson City dog parks went through social media last week and early this week, but according to David Navarro, Parks Operation Superintendent for Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space, those rumors are unsubstantiated.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities over the next three days. Restaurants in Carson City will host Valentine’s Day specials on Friday. The Carson City Celtic Music series will be at the Brewery Arts Center on Saturday featuring Fortunate Strangers. Bo-Keito is a one-year-old Blue-tick Coonhound and has had a difficult time finding a forever home. He was actually adopted from the shelter, but was returned just after Christmas, which is incredibly sad.

Lucy is a 9-month old bundle of joy who is currently looking for her forever home, and has been since she was oh so little (see second photo for example of just how tiny).

Happy Christmas Eve Carson City! This is a special, Christmas Pet of the Week, featuring a little sweet baby angel named Brenda who needs to find a forever home.

A Carson City family estate presented checks to three organizations on Wednesday amounting to more than $600,000.

In the spirit of giving and the Christmas holidays ahead, three organizations will receive generous donations amounting to more than $500,000 in memory of Frances M. Parker, a longtime Carson City resident and former owner of the Crossroads Lounge.
