CARSON CITY, Nev. — The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection’s efforts to secure funds from the company responsible for perchlorate entering Lake Mead has ended with a settlement of approximately $1 billion to support cleanup efforts in Nevada.

On Wednesday, March 19, students in Carson City and Lyon County will join others from across the state to take part in the 5th Annual Nevada Moves Day. This event consists of organized activities that encourage walking or bicycling to school. The event is promoted statewide by the Safe Routes to School Program.

Governor Brian Sandoval issued a proclamation declaring March 19 as Nevada Moves Day 2014 and will meet students from Bordewich-Bray Elementary School who are taking part in a walking school bus that starts at the Governor’s Mansion on Mountain Street.

He described and mapped the Oregon Trail, was the Republican Party’s first presidential candidate, and served as California’s military governor in 1847.

While state jobless figures went down for the month, the October unemployment figures in Carson City increased to 9.6 percent, up from from September’s 9.4 percent.

"Carson City's economy still struggles and has lost 700 jobs or -2.5 percent relative to one year ago," according to Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation Labor overview.

State and federal agencies and non-profit organization leaders will meet Wednesday with Nevada’s First Lady Kathleen Sandoval at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City to address food and hunger issues during the Northern Nevada Food Summit.

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval this morning issued the following statement after learning of the shooting at Sparks Middle School. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports two are dead and two in critical condition in the shooting.

More than 1,060 firefighters continued efforts Tuesday battling the Bison Fire in the Pine Nut Mountains east of Gardnerville, which has prompted a voluntary evacuation of the Pipeline Canyon area in Lyon County. As of early Tuesday evening, the fire has burned 25,733 acres and is 25 percent contained.

The Bison Fire burning in Douglas County grew to 25,733 acres by early Tuesday morning, with 25 percent containment and Douglas County declaring a state of emergency to allow for more resources. More than 700 personnel are assigned to the fire.

Overnight the fire burned actively from the north side until about 3 a.m. the on the northeast and southeast sides. The night crews were able to make significant progress, said Lisa Ross, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Land Management.

Great Basin Management Type 2 Team, operating under Incident Commander Mike Whalen, reports fire fighters made progress today even though the fire increased in size to 21,337 acres, with almost all of the acreage increase on the north side of the incident. The fire is now 25-percent contained with a revised full containment target date of July 15.

The May unemployment rate in Carson City fell from 10.1 percent to 9.5 percent, marking the lowest number of unemployed in the capital city since 2008.

Statewide, unemployment rate fell from 9.6 percent to 9.5 percent, seasonally adjusted, with 131,400 people looking for work, marking the 29th straight month of private-sector job creation on a year-over-year basis and the lowest number of unemployed since the worst of the recession hit the Silver State beginning in 2008.

With less than 20 days left in this legislative session, Governor Brian Sandoval is announcing last-minute tweaks to his proposed budget.

Nevada’s unemployment rate fell to seasonally adjusted 9.7 percent in January, which is the 18th straight month the state has seen a decline in the number of people unemployed. Now below Rhode Island, the Silver State is no longer considered the state with the highest unemployment rate in the country, a position it had held since February 2010.

The unemployment rate in Carson City is down 1.8 percentage points since last year and stood at 11.2 percent in January 2013.

Carson City attorney Jackie Bryant will join Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval's team as Deputy Chief of Staff beginning Feb. 19. She will replace Ann Wilkinson, who has served as Sandoval's Deputy Chief of Staff since January 2011.
Wilkinson is leaving to return to the practice of law, effective Feb. 20.

Nevada's unemployment figures continue to show relative signs of improvement with a decline in figures for December at 10.2 percent compared to November's 10.8 percent. In Carson City, the drop was significant, with 10.1 percent unemployment for the month compared to 12.8 percent a year ago, a 2.7 percent difference.

Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes was among four non-voting members appointed Monday by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval to the State Board of Education. Two voting members were also appointed — Stavan Corbett of Clark County and Freeman Holbrook of Washoe County.

“Today’s appointments are the next steps in reforming the governance of K-12 education in our state, a process I began during the 2011 Legislative session,” Gov. Sandoval said. “Working to deliver the best education to our state’s children must be our highest priority.”

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has appointed Minden attorney Nathan “Tod” Young to the Ninth Judicial District Court, Department 1 vacancy.

“Tod’s breadth of experience which comes from owning his own law practice to serving as an arbitrator will serve as a strong foundation for the bench,” Governor Brian Sandoval said in a Dec. 21 statement. “Combined with having served as a legal guardian, I am confident that Tod will be a valuable addition to the Ninth Judicial District Court.”

NIXON, Nev. – Wayne Burke, Tribal Chairman of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe died early Sunday morning in Nixon. Burke, hailed as a passionate advocate for Native American Veterans affairs and water rights to Pyramid Lake was 38 years old.

SPARKS – U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., showed up at a Sparks floral shop today to receive the endorsement of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in his reelection bid against Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev.

The national endorsement was made by former U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, who said the choice was clear for the organization.

CARSON CITY, NV – Governor Brian Sandoval today commended the work of the Nevada Sage-grouse Advisory Committee which issued recommendations yesterday on a course of action that provides conservation measures sufficient to preclude the need to list the Greater Sage-grouse under the Endangered Species Act.

“I thank the Advisory Committee, its Chairman, Bob Crowell and each of the members for their diligent and timely work on this very important issue,” Governor Sandoval said. “Representatives from a cross section of our state collaborated in an effort to conserve the Greater Sage-grouse species while maintaining predictable and multiple uses of private, state and public lands. I look forward to reviewing the Committee’s recommendations.”
