A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the new location of Intimate Designs (ID) Floral Wednesday night, with Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell doing the honors.

People, even Nevadans themselves, often ask why Carson City is our beloved capital. It does seem odd, when you look at the “City,” half rural, half town. Reno has more than double our population, and Las Vegas even more. During the Comstock Boom, Virginia City was arguably the largest, most profitable city in the state.

So how did little Carson City become the central legislative hub of Nevada?

My name is Christine Renee Miller and I passed away in Carson City this last Wednesday, January 9, at 9:02 p.m.

I was born in Reno on May 16, 1979 and placed in the arms of an angel. I grew up with the love of a wonderful family in Carson City and departed with their blessing.

I went to school at Carson High and graduated in 1997 with good memories and even better friends. I brought two beautiful daughters into this world and passed away with them by my side.

Emilie Susan Doyle, 55, of Carson City, passed away on November 19, 2018 surrounded by her family. Born May 10, 1963 in Stockton, Calif., to Frank and Rose Marie Doyle, she moved to Nevada as a teenager where she graduated from Douglas High School.

A Celebration of Life service for David Craig Romesburg, 42, a Carson City landscaper, will be held Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018, 11 a.m. at Calvary Chapel Church on Clearview Drive in Carson City.

Juliette “Julia” Bulette was born in England in 1832 and quickly became the proprietor of the most lavish and prosperous brothel in Virginia City. She was beloved by all, and became an honorary member of the Virginia Engine Company Number 1 fire brigade.

For the past four years, Angels With Flowers has donated floral arrangements to hospitals and senior care centers throughout the Carson City area. On Monday, the program, established by local florist Lori Morris, donated its 99th and 100th arrangement of 2018.

A fundraiser will be held Wednesday at Firehouse Subs in Carson City, and so far, nearly $23,000 has been raised overall for the family of Anthony Francone and Kristyn Smithwick of Carson City, whose children were injured in a fatal July 29 Oregon crash that took the life of the children's stepsister, 17-year-old Gabbi Smithwick.

Paul Dominique Laxalt, a former Nevada Governor, United States Senator, Lieutenant Governor and District Attorney, and one of former President Ronald Reagan’s closest friends in politics, died at a healthcare facility in Northern Virginia on Monday. He was 96.

According to friends, a memorial letter "K" went up late last week and remains Monday on C-Hill in memory of Curtis Ryan Kiernan, who died June 29 in a motorcycle crash in Sparks.

Nevada Humanities is pleased to announce that 27 grants totaling over $104,500 were awarded to fund humanities programs across Nevada, including four in Carson City area.

I recently cleaned out old files on my computer, coming across one I hadn't seen in six years.

It was the eulogy I wrote for and delivered at my father's funeral on June 30, 2012.

Reading through it for the first time in six years stirred up a lot of memories, some painful but mostly fond.

Mark William Yenter, recently retired deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Carson City resident, died May 25, 2018. He was 60 years old.

A funeral service will be held for Maj. Gen. Yenter at the First Presbyterian Church in Carson City at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, with interment to follow at Lone Mountain Cemetery here. He will receive full military honors.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association-Sierra Tahoe Unit No. 137 donated to several worthy organizations this year, among them was the Northern Nevada All Veterans Honor Guard.

U.S. Army veteran David Meeker has proven himself an able leader and willing volunteer, supporting Nevada's military members and fellow veterans. That is why he was chosen to receive the Veteran of the Month award and honor.

Wayne Pershing McAnally, a native Roseville resident, went to be with the Lord on December 29, 2017 after a long battle with Alzheimers.

Born to Dr. James F. and Marie (Gold) McAnally on September 28,1938. Graduated from Roseville High School, Class of 1957. He graduated from San Francisco College of Mortuary Science, receiving the Mu Sigma Alpha outstanding Academic Proficiency Award. He was very active in his community and to name a few, he was a member of Masonic Lodge #222, Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and the Roseville Cemetery Board of Directors.

The Northern Nevada All Veteran Honor Guard based in Carson City reports it has received more than $3,700 in donations for repairs to its shuttle bus it uses to transport families to and from military funerals. The honor guard still needs help in order to achieve its vehicle repair goal.

A special candle lighting ceremony to remember loved ones takes place this evening at Fitzhenry’s Funeral Home. All those who have lost someone are welcome to participate. Carson High School student Timothy Jones was remembered by family, friends, school teachers and coaches Monday at a Celebration of Life service in Carson City.

There will be a public military funeral for 13 unclaimed Nevada veterans on Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, 2 p.m. at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

UPDATE 3:08PM: The following is a statement from Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes regarding the passing of Timothy Jones.
“Our hearts ache for all the families and individuals involved in the car accident in Kings Canyon. We learned yesterday from law enforcement that one of our students passed away. Throughout the day today, the administration at Carson High School has provided and will continue to provide, as needed this week, grief counseling and support for students and staff. As more is learned about a memorial service, we will pass that information along.”

Family members confirmed via social media Sunday that 16-year-old Carson High School student Timothy Jones, one of seven students involved in a Nov. 9 crash on Kings Canyon, has died.

Jim Smolenski has been named manager of the Walton’s Funerals & Cremations in Carson City and Gardnerville. A long-time Carson City funeral director, embalmer and funeral home manager, Smolenski graduated from the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science in 1977.

Congress has special rules that apply when a loss results from a casualty like Harvey or Irma. Victims have more time to file their 2016 income tax returns-until Jan. 31, 2018. And they also have until Jan. 31, 2018 to pay the estimated tax payments due Sept. 15 and the following Jan. 16, 2018.

On Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 the remains of 27 veterans will finally receive the military burial and honor they were promised through their service in the U.S. Armed Forces. The service will be held beginning at 2 p.m. at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Cemetery, located at 14 Veterans Way, in Fernley, Nev. The public is invited to attend.
