Douglas County and the State of Nevada is hosting an in person educational event to inform citizens on flood preparation on November 17, 2020 from 3-4:30pm in the Ranch View Room of the Douglas County Community and Senior Center.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors voted to create a new ordinance relating to hemp cultivation within city limits on Thursday, allowing for indoor cultivation within certain zoning districts, effectively blocking outdoor agricultural cultivation.

At their September 3rd and 17th meetings, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners discussed the proposed Painted Rock Mine, located on tribal trust land administered by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) in Douglas County.

The Painted Rock Mine is a proposed commercial gravel pit operation east of the Johnson Lane Community.

After an almost two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, Sparks Mayor Ron Smith has died. He was 71 years old.

Mayor Smith was officially sworn in as the 25th Mayor of Sparks on November 13, 2018. He was elected to the Sparks City Council in November 2006 and was re-elected to four-year terms in 2008, 2012 and 2016. He served as Sparks Mayor Pro Tempore from 2012-2018.

UPDATE 4:39PM: A Flash Flood Warning was issued at 4:28 p.m. for Douglas and Lyon counties and Carson City. Also, firefighters are responding to a number of wild land fire starts in Douglas County. Go here for updates on the fire situation.

Strong to potentially severe thunderstorms are possible through 9 p.m. Tuesday across the eastern Sierra, western Nevada and Carson City region, according to the National Weather Service.

MINDEN — Douglas County officials are informing residents near the Numbers Fire area to be aware for potential flooding. The National Weather Service in Reno has outlined the potential for thunderstorms in the burn area of the Numbers Fire for Wednesday, July 15 and Thursday, July 16, with the potential for flooding the rest of the week in the Fish Springs and Ruhenstroth areas.

I've never had to worry about illnesses, because I've always known how I was going to die. I would step into an open manhole while out running and get swept out to sea, however that's not likely to happen because I'm no longer running. But it did happen to a Brazilian girl last week, and she lived to tell about it.

UPDATE 3:39PM: The Monarch Fire is approximately 2,500 acres and currently 5 percent contained. No structures are immediately threatened at this time and the fire is believed to be lightning caused from the previous day. Responding agencies include East Fork, Central Lyon, North Lake Tahoe, North Lyon, Story County, Tahoe Douglas and Truckee Meadows Fire Protection Districts, Reno Fire Department, Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service.

As of 9:45 a.m. Thursday morning, the fire in the Pine Nuts in Douglas County, which has been named the Monarch Fire, now covers a total of 1,794 acres.

Multiple agencies are on scene to try and control the fire which is thought to have been caused by a lightning strike during yesterday’s thunderstorm.

For nearly three and a half decades Curtis Horton made Carson City Public Works his life’s purpose. Over the course of these 35 years Horton witnessed Public Works drastically transform, grow, improve, and services expanded.

Earlier this month, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation issued a press release with a jubilant headline: “Nevada’s Unemployment Rate Hits an All-Time Low.”

Carson City is at the center of a legal dispute following its refusal to allow hemp to be grown on property in the Buzzys Ranch area in East Carson City. Tahoe Hemp is suing for $15 million in damages citing the city broke its agreement with the Jarrard Family Trust, which gives rights to the family to use the property for agricultural purposes.

The Empire Ranch Trail between Riverview Park and Morgan Mill in Carson City is temporarily closed during reconstruction; the trail was damaged during flooding in 2017.

A 50-year-old flooding issue in a Carson City neighborhood could finally see a solution with the “North Carson Area Drainage Plan” proposed by Carson City Public Works.

According to Robert Fellows, P.E., Chief Stormwater Engineer for Public Works, an issue involving flooding or “ponding” in a particular Carson City neighborhood has been on the books as an issue since Carson City was still Ormsby County, going back to the 1970s.

For 20 years I have been bringing Christmas events to Downtown Carson City, beginning in 2000 when I had my retail store on Telegraph Square with Santa and his real reindeer. The Santa Parade was created in 2007 and was always the Saturday after the Silver and Snowflake festival originating at Telegraph Square to bring awareness to the existing businesses in the area.

The Northridge subdivision of Carson City has four distinct parks or recreation areas. They are

CARSON CITY — Wetlands are the link between land and water, where the flow of water, the cycling of nutrients, and the energy of the sun meet to create highly productive ecosystems with unique plant and animal life.

In broad terms, wetlands refer to all wet areas that provide ecosystem services and habitat for plants, wildlife, and aquatic species, including wet meadows, seeps and springs, playas, and riparian areas.

Carson City invites interested individuals to bid on the purchase of the Brown Street Properties comprising of parcel numbers 008-303-15, -16, -21, 36, -37, and -39, through public auction for not less than fair market value.

In 2005 the Western Nevada HOME Consortium (WNHC) funded the purchase of properties on Brown Street using federal HOME funds in order to construct 45 units of affordable, for-ownership low-income housing. This project failed to materialize due to the economic downturn and the eventual bankruptcy of the developer.

Two Carson City residents were arrested in the 1100 block of Fremont Street for alleged cultivation of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance for sale, trafficking marijuana, and cultivation of concentrated marijuana, all felony charges.

Carson City skateboarders and scooter-riders participated in the third annual skate competition hosted by Carson City Parks and Recreation, Carson City's Wheelhouse and Tahoe's Woodward.

A chance of afternoon thunderstorms and low humidity has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag fire weather warning Wednesday for the Carson City region, western Nevada and eastern Sierra.

Money begets money. And, that statement is true when it comes to the Carson City Parks & Recreation Foundation.

Recently, the Foundation was the recipient of a $20,000 matching grant from the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation to continue to refresh the Bob Boldrick Theater lobby within the community center that started in February allowing then Chamber Chairman of the Board Bob Fredlund to present the Foundation with a check for $20,300.

Virginia City’s popularity as a “must-see” destination has never waned, and with the local tourist agency's focus on bringing more events to the Comstock, visitor numbers are certainly expected to grow.

One thing the historic mining town wasn’t prepared for, however, was a strain on one very-important utility.

UPDATE 730PM: The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Douglas County in western Nevada and Alpine County in Calif. Thunderstorms producing heavy rain were reported across the Carson Range west of Foothill Road. Flash flooding is expected. Rock slides, debris flows are possible. The warning is until 8:30 p.m.
