Carson City woman admits to falsifying documents to steal sister's student loan check
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 10/07/2013 - 11:06amA Carson City woman was arrested and faces a felony fraud charge after confessing to stealing her sister's Sally Mae student loan money after the two had gotten into an argument.
Mariena Acosta, 28, was booked into Carson City Jail on Oct. 4. She told authorities that she altered documents in order for a $2,326 check meant for her sister to go into a separate bank account. After the check was deposited, she went ahead and spent the money.
NV Energy warns of telephone scammers threatening to cut off service for payment

NV Energy spokeswoman Faye Andersen said the company has learned about phone callers identifying themselves as employees of the company and threatening disconnection of service if a credit card payment or cash transfer isn't immediately made over the phone.
Western Nevada College rural campuses help boost enrollment
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 09/11/2013 - 5:18pmEnrollment at both rural campuses of Western Nevada College has increased this fall, after six years of state budget cuts that drastically reduced programs and available classes.
Full-time equivalent enrollment, which measures the number of credits a student takes and is a key factor in determining state funding levels, rose 4 percent at the Fallon campus to 415 and 3 percent at the Douglas campus to 371. At the Carson City campus, full-time equivalent headcount rose by 2 percent, indicating that individual students are enrolling in more credits.

Loyal guests know Jabbour as part of the management team that took over hotel and casino operations at Carson Station when it was purchased by Las Vegas based 777 Gaming two years ago.

Management change made at Carson City animal shelter
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 08/22/2013 - 4:07pmManagement changes have been made at the Carson City animal facility, city officials confirmed Thursday. Gail Radtke, who served as the animal services manager, is no longer with the city.
Bob Elliott, who is the current Environmental Health Inspector with Carson City Health and Human Services, will be the interim manager. A permanent replacement will be done in a search.
Demonstrators hopeful for changes at animal shelter

She and others were demonstrating against practices at the shelter after a pet dog was recently euthanized when the owner said she couldn't pay the fees on time.
The shelter said it was within its rights, but should have allowed the woman, Jeraldine Archuleta, additional time needed to come up with the money.

Carson City man faces felony charge in domestic battery
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 07/30/2013 - 11:03amA Carson City man was jailed early Tuesday morning following a domestic battery in which he allegedly prevented the victim from reporting the crime.
Amalio Pedro Montanes, 25, was arrested in the 3300 block of Pontius Place at 1:26 a.m. According to the arrest report, officers responded to the residence on a welfare check after dispatch received a call from a woman who gave an address and then disconnected.
Upon arrival officers met with the victim who stated she was upset with her boyfriend, identified a Montanes. The victim said he had come home drunk and wanted him to leave.
Federal drought disaster loans available to Northern Nevada small businesses

These loans that must be applied for would offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by the drought experienced from May 20 to July 14, 2013, said Alfred E. Judd, director of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center ‑ West.

Southwest Gas alerts customers to scammers posing as utility employees

In a news release the utility noted that employees always wear a company uniform, display Southwest Gas identification cards, usually only come to a home and enter when service is requested at the customers request and identify themselves and the purpose of their visit.
Letter: Prison steals work and jobs from struggling Nevada companies

I felt that the general public should know what our prison system is doing to multiple small business owners in Carson City and Nevada. NV Energy does not call customers and solicit payments. If customers receive a call asking for a payment, they should refuse and call local law enforcement official or NV Energy if they have additional questions.
Hundreds show for Carson Nugget's 58th Thanksgiving community dinner

NV Energy warns of credit card scam
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 09/06/2012 - 3:59pmNV Energy warned on Thursday of another scam designed to obtain credit card numbers and money transfers from unsuspecting customers. The company has learned that imposters are calling customers demanding payments and threatening to turn off power.
Company spokesman Karl Walquist said NV Energy does not call customers about utility payments, regardless if they owe money. The company does not solicit credit card or other payments over the phone. Customers whose accounts are in arrears are notified through the U.S. Postal Service that payment is due.

- Joaquin Paul Gabriel Jr., 29, an electrician from San Jose, Calif., at 10:30 p.m. Friday. Gabriel was arrested for possession of a controlled substance (cocaine), as well as misdemeanor allegations of possession of less than one ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail has been set at $4,100 plus administrative fees.
