Indy Explains Electoral College: How a candidate can lose the presidency after winning a majority of votes
Submitted by admin on Mon, 11/02/2020 - 8:16pmAlmost 3 million more people voted for Hillary Clinton than for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, yet it is Trump’s pardon that saves a Thanksgiving turkey's life and whose signature on an executive order can change American lives in an instant.

Submitted by admin on Wed, 06/03/2020 - 10:53amDemocrats competing in the Congressional District 2 primary have poured tens of thousands of dollars into the race in the hopes of pulling off a historic first: winning a Northern Nevada seat no Democrat has ever won.
A case for a Congressional candidate with common sense and mutual respect for Congress
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sun, 05/17/2020 - 1:45pmThe polarizing attitudes and ideology that has taken over the American political environment -- as witnessed in recently-held political debates and rallies, nationwide -- is a danger to traditional American democratic values of diversity and respect of the “marketplace of ideas”, where people are not listening to each other, where respect for diversity is lacking, where the prevailing political attitude seems to be “my way or the highway”.
Boomers’ Legacy to Children: New Progressivism, Statism (Opinion)
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 05/30/2019 - 6:03amThis is the third in my series on the sad legacy we Boomers are leaving our children.
The first column defined the public interest as mainly maximizing economic growth. That piece and the second showed that the economic policies, practices and institutions that maximize growth also promote fairness among individuals. They also debunked obsessions with income inequality.
Here I focus on the revival of progressivism and liberal statism, plus the addition of political correctness (PC).
Really? (Opinion)
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 09/19/2018 - 9:04amDemocrats have hit a new low. Beyond Antifa. Beyond plain socialism. Beyond the Clinton lies and corruption. Beyond any reason and decency.
They dug up and then hid an accusation that Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh was involved in sexual misconduct when he was in high school.
Not a series of continuing transgressions. Not an incident ten years ago, or from law school, or from his undergraduate college days. But in high school.
We guess they couldn’t find the girl with whom Kavanaugh played “post office” in kindergarten.
No Easy Fix to Election Hacking, But We Still Have Hope (Opinion)
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 08/15/2018 - 8:56amSeveral years ago, the movie comedy “Man of the Year”, starring the late Robin Williams, was based on a strange premise. His character, a comedian on the presidential ballot in just enough states to carry a majority of the Electoral College, was elected president via a computer flaw.

What Works: Dealing with loss, opening to gain
Submitted by editor on Tue, 04/24/2018 - 8:40amIt seems, this week, so many I know have lost something. Whether it’s a job, health, a relationship, or an expectation, loss is real. It’s emotionally hard. In some cases, it’s a crisis. Loss of a client can hurt or kill a business if a contingency plan isn’t in place. Losing a job or a partner can be life altering. So, how can you recover faster?

Measuring Liberty and Libertarians
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 10/25/2016 - 9:06amThe corrupt Clinton criminals are repeating this strategy of divide and conquer again in this election and every voter should understand that any Republican vote for third parties helps insure victory for the lollipop guild Hillary who is as intelligent, and honest, as she is tall. The Clinton's crime family rose to power using the divide and conquer assistance of Ross Perot. The Clinton's can win again with only a minority of votes because many voters split the electorate three ways.
Measuring Socialist Insanity
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 10/18/2016 - 8:51amThe question for a Hillary voter is; Have you learned nothing from eight years of Obamanation socialism and how can another four years of the same failed socialist squandering of taxpayer money ever change anything? Does anyone really believe that socialism will work if we squander more tens of trillions of taxpayer money? In 3700 years of recorded history socialist ideologies have been repeatedly tried and always resulted in the destruction of a nation followed by mass murder from tyrannical dictators. Socialism is slavery.
Measuring Feminist Insanity
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 10/14/2016 - 12:20pmA recent left wing CNN poll indicates that Trump is fifteen points above Hillary on the issue of trust. Some feminist organizations are generating the old divide and conquer smear campaigns to argue that the laws broken by the Clinton crime family should be ignored because Trump's politically incorrect genitals are not to be trusted. This argument makes about as much sense as suggesting that men and women need different forums such as 'women to women' or 'man to man'. This is the disreputable strategy of divide and conquer to pretend that men and women share nothing in common.
Nevada's Tax and Spending Changes Play Poorly on National Stage
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 10/12/2016 - 8:26amEvery two years, the Cato Institute in Washington, DC ranks the recent changes in state fiscal policies to give readers an understanding of the trends prevailing in each state. Last week, Cato released its newest Fiscal Report Card, and Nevada fares poorly.
Of the 50 states plus Washington, DC, Nevada ranks 47th due to its unfavorable shifts in tax rates and spending in the last legislative session.
Study author Chris Edwards notes that large unfunded liabilities for public-employee pensions and ballooning Medicaid costs are putting upward pressure on state budgets.

Bailouts, Arrogance and Corruption in ‘The Big Short’
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 08/03/2016 - 1:26pmSometimes Hollywood hits a homerun.
For example, The Big Short, the movie account of the US financial collapse of 2007-09. Its all-star cast is notable. But we were skeptical from the sound bites used in previews and other promotional blather that this would be another anti-capitalist propaganda flick. We were wrong.

Optimists and Many Nevadans Continue Tax Fight with Cynical State Politicians
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 10/28/2015 - 9:13amIf we share a weakness, it’s our perpetual optimism.
As free-market economists, we often reflect on the amazing achievements of the past 300 years, and doing so, grow sanguine about what people can accomplish when free to create, innovate, produce and exchange with each other mostly free of government interference.

Column: Details of The New Nevada Commerce Tax
Submitted by editor on Mon, 06/08/2015 - 1:38pmWell, as Nevadans, we are collectively now stuck with a new tax. It's name? Commerce Tax. (A Clever disguise for the recently defeated Gross Margin Tax?) Up until a few days ago, it was believed that this wouldn't pass. I have yet to see any real media explanation of the details, so, after reading the text of the bill enough times (SB483), while my head is still spinning, I will attempt to give you a little more of the picture.

Tesla Freebies
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 09/10/2014 - 7:13amThe choice in the Tesla deal is not between socking the corporation with higher or lower taxes; the choice is between getting nothing from them if the don't come, or getting all the increased sales tax revenue as their employees spend their money HERE. THAT is a win for everybody.
But conventional thinking always degenerates into the predatory socialist politics of greed, and sees everything only in terms of windfalls, favors or corruption. What's the loot, who gets what, who wins, who loses.
