I’ll bet the kids are chomping at the bit: one last week before winter break and just days away from Christmas. For some family friendly entertainment tonight, the Tintabultation Handbell Ensemble is offering a free concert at the Marriott Courtyard at Casino Fandago. Learn some new tricks in the kitchen with a free cooking class by Healthy Communities Coalition at the Dayton Community Center. Pumpkin lattes and chocolate silk cake are on the menu. Here’s another take on gift giving. Give a living Christmas tree in a pot that your gift receiver can plant in their yard after Christmas. If you give a tree, include these tips. While indoors, check the moisture content of the root ball daily. Water it when the top two inches of soil feels dry.

Thanksgiving isn't a patriotic holiday per se, but it is full of patriotic feelings as Americans did and should give thanks for our shared blessings as a nation.

The annual Dayton Christmas Tree lighting is today, Sunday, Dec. 4 beginning at 5 p.m. at Our Park. Festivities include pictures with Santa, a Civil War Christmas display, cookies and hot drinks, music, carols, an ugly sweater contest, plus if you donate a non-perishable food item, you have a chance to be the official tree lighter.

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club celebrates the holiday season and the continuing celebration of its 120th year on Wednesday, Dec. 21 with special guest performer Christina Bourne. The meeting is preceded by a buffet dinner at 6:30 pm in the Carson Nugget Capitol Ballroom.

Following weeks of preparation on the grounds of the Nevada State Capitol and around downtown Carson City, the Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights flipped the switch on the 2016 holiday season.

Tonight’s the night! With one flip of the switch all of downtown joins in the Christmas Spirit. The Silver and Snowflakes Festival includes carols, sleigh rides, hot chocolate, and of course, the lighting of the Capitol. Don’t forget to head to the First Presbyterian Church for the Annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser. You’ll get a handmade, hand painted ceramic bowl to keep and lots of yummy food to keep you warm. The talented kids of Wild Horse Children’s Theater hit the stage for opening night of ‘Elf Jr.

December has arrived and it brings a plethora of holiday cheer. Gardnerville kicks off the weekend of lights with their Heritage Park Tree lighting, caroling, and fireworks. Carson City, Genoa, and Minden follow suit Friday with their own lighting festivities. Karaoke at Living the Good Life and Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar are the perfect place to bust out your rendition of ‘Santa Baby’ or ‘Rockin Around the Christmas Tree.’ Bundle up if you’d care to join Muscle Powered on their easy hike around Riverview Park. Hello fellow anglers, Wishing you a warm and a happy holiday fishing season. Although many areas in our local area have closed for the season, we still have plenty of options to keep on fishing. The lakes in the higher altitudes have started to freeze and ice fishing will be upon us soon. I ask anglers to resist the urge to venture out on lakes and ponds until we have at least eight inches of solid ice.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in downtown Carson City.

Especially at the State Capitol, where grounds crews are working hard to complete the holiday display in preparation for Friday's annual Silver and Snowflake Festival, a Carson City tradition for 28 years.

This week's It's Your City with Cortney Bloomer features Ronni Hannaman, executive director of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce to discuss the Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights this Friday, Dec. 2 and several other events planned for the holidays.

For more than a quarter century, Carson City’s own Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights has rung in the holiday season for residents and visitors of the Nevada state capital.

Perennial holiday favorite “The Nutcracker” by the Pinkerton Ballet Theatre returns to Carson City Thanksgiving weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 25-27. Featuring Erica Chipp of the Smuin Ballet in San Francisco as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Oliver Adams of Diablo Ballet in Concord, CA as Cavalier, this 28th year of performances is not to be missed.

Permits to cut Christmas trees on the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will be available for purchase beginning Nov. 21. The U.S. Forest Service Christmas Tree Program is designed for families, businesses, and institutions wishing to cut their own trees for decorating.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will offer Christmas tree cutting permits beginning Monday, Nov. 7, 2016. Permits are $10 each with a limit of two permits per family.

St. Peter's Episcopal Church in downtown Carson City at Telegraph and Division streets offers its annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday November 12 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. The bazaar features crafters who won a total of 19 ribbons at the 2015 Nevada State Fair. Raffle tickets will be on sale for "The Secret Garden," a highly imaginative appliquéd quilt with William Morris inspired floral motifs.

Bring some art into your new year with one of our many art exhibits. The Nevada Artist Association has just switched up their gallery and has a New Year’s show to offer you. The group also works with the Carson Visitor Bureau and showcases a different artist each month in the Visitors’ Center: currently Bob Hickox. Comma Coffee is hosting a reception this evening for the January artist in their revolving Backseat Gallery, so head down at 5 p.m. for some finger food and the unveiling.

A lot of people will tell you it’s never a good idea to play with fire, but for the folks of Controlled Burn, fire can be art. A new community practice group is starting up at A to Zen and everyone is welcome to come learn what it takes to dance with fire. The Carson City Classical Cinema Club is growing and has moved its monthly movie viewings to the Black Box Theater at the Brewery Arts Center. If you aren’t a member yet, it is just five dollars to enjoy Prince and the Pauper tonight.

Welcome to Monday, Carson City. The holidays have passed and it’s time to embrace the new year. If you’re looking for some new hobbies and habits, try swing dancing. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club meets weekly at El Charro Avita. If you’re looking for more quality time with your family, then Nerdvana’s Family Game Night is a great way to have fun with the kids. Recycling your Christmas tree (sans decorations, of course) is an easy way to get your carbon footprint headed in the right direction.

Go ahead and keep the Christmas tree up through the weekend but by Sunday night you may want remove the ornaments and take it down as curbside recycling in Carson City begins Monday.

What can you do with your Christmas tree once the decorations come down? Carson City is offering Christmas tree recycling in cooperation with Capital Sanitation and Waste Management Inc.
As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day beginning Jan. 4 or taken to one of the drop-off locations.

Santa Claus will be delivering presents tonight to girls and boys throughout the capital city, but unfortunately due to the bad weather, he won’t be guided by Carson City sheriff’s reserve officers.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has ordered all state government offices, other than essential public safety and corrections personnel, to close at noon Thursday due to the winter storm in Carson City.

The Christmas Eve storm, which has packed several inches of snow in the capital city, is causing problems along area roads, with numerous spinouts and crashes.

The world record for the largest human Christmas tree remains unbroken this morning. Carson High School Senior Taylor Weddell rallied the community in an attempt to break the world record for the largest human Christmas tree, a record held by Honduras with 2,945 people.

Father Time was on hand to take pictures with kids and those young at heart while people signed in to take part in the event. 490 people took part in the attempt to break the record and raised nearly $800 for elementary and middle school programs.
