Figuring out the difference between a cell phone and a gun turned out to be the difference between a fatal shooting of a suspect and what ended up as an arrest without any serious injuries for Sgt. Earl Mays of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

Vehicle crashes in Carson City up 20 percent, driver inattention largely to blame

Driver inattentiveness, speeding and cell phone use are factors for around 20 percent more vehicle crashes along Carson City area roads this year compared to the first seven months of 2014, a Carson City Sheriff’s Office sergeant said this week.

Not counting those crashes investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol, there’s been 250-plus crashes from January to July of this year. During the first seven months of 2014, there were 200 crashes, said Carson City Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Scott McDaniel.

Carson City sheriffs log: Man jailed for child neglect, allegedly leaves son on interstate

A 39-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday in the 1500 block of Monte Rosa Drive on suspicion of felony child neglect, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Carson Now is withholding the name of the suspect, who is the father of the victim, to protect the juvenile. The man was booked at 3:03 p.m. on $40,000 bail.

Carson City sheriff’s log: Man who reports ATM card stolen jailed after photos show him with card

A 32-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday in the 1900 block of North Carson Street on a misdemeanor charge of filing a false police report, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said. According to the arrest report, the man told deputies in June that his ATM debit card had been stolen and subsequently filed a report with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.

Crosswalk safety operations on three busy Carson City streets commenced Tuesday with 42 citations issued to motorists, said Carson City Sheriff’s Sgt. Scott McDaniel. Carson City sheriff’s weekend log: Jail inmate fight leads to felony battery charge

A 24-year-old inmate in the Carson City Jail faces a felony charge of battery by a prisoner after a fight inside the detention facility, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

According to the arrest report, Stig Corrin Strong of Minden fought with another prisoner with Strong determined to be the primary aggressor. Video footage showed that he pushed, punched and choked another inmate.

Body of missing Carson City man found in steep area off Kings Canyon

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday that a missing Carson City man, Bruce Hutter, has been found dead off of Kings Canyon Road in Douglas County.

The body of Hutter was found inside a white passenger car discovered Sunday by a couple four-wheel driving in a rugged area of Kings Canyon.

Dale Trembath said he and his wife were four-wheel driving at around 2:30 p.m. in the canyon when they decided to go down a steep area. He said he looked and saw the car that he described as a white Dodge Neon, and walked over to it.

Armed robbery reported at Slotworld's Cabaret on East Winnie Lane

UPDATE: An armed robbery was reported shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday at Slotworld's Cabaret, 324 East Winnie Lane in Carson City. The robbery involved two adult male suspects, one with a skeleton mask and the other described as wearing a green jacket, according to Carson City dispatch.

Carson City sheriff's detective division seeks help locating missing local man

Carson City Sheriff's Office detectives are asking for the public's help in finding a local man who hasn't been seen since the middle of February.

Bruce Hutter of Carson City was last seen by friends Valentine’s Day weekend 2015. Cell phone records indicate that on Feb. 17, at about 10:45 p.m. Bruce called AAA asking for a jump on his white 2005 Dodge Neon with Nevada License plates 528UJL. He provided his location as 930 Tahoe Blvd in Incline Village at Lake Tahoe, said Detective Sal Acosta.

Carson City sheriff's log: Arrests made for burglary, DUIs and battery involving pepper spray

Two people, a 39-year-old woman and 35-year-old man were arrested Saturday in the 700 block of Hot Springs Road in Carson City on suspicion of felony burglary. Arrested were Deeanna Sue Byars and James Thomas Rebelez. Each are being held on $20,000 bond, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

According to the arrest report, at approximately 2 p.m. an officer was dispatched to 3200 Market Street, Walmart, for a petit larceny report. The officer learned the suspects were walking down Hot Springs Road.

Search and Rescue operation at Kings Canyon; man says he's been stuck for three days

UPDATE 1:35PM: A man stuck up Kings Canyon has been rescued, according to Carson City dispatch. The man is said to be suffering from cold exposure and was treated by a Carson City fire and rescue ambulance team at the Nevada Department of Transportation substation at the top of Spooner Summit. He was taken to the hospital.

A search and rescue operation is underway this afternoon in the Kings Canyon area. According to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, the man told dispatch that he has been stuck up in the canyon with a vehicle for three days and says he may have frostbite.

Carson City Search and Rescue team respond to stuck vehicle up Kings Canyon

UPDATE 10:38PM: Two people were rescued from near the top of Kings Canyon late Friday night, including an 81-year-old woman, after their vehicle became stuck on a trail earlier in the evening. Carson City Search and Rescue reports the rescue part of the operation was completed at 10:35 p.m. with efforts continuing late Friday night to get the vehicle down from the canyon.
An ambulance was called to evaluate the 81-year-old woman.

Carson City Search and Rescue have been dispatched tonight to a vehicle stuck near the top of Kings Canyon. The couple inside the vehicle are unhurt and have cell phone coverage and are warm, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Winter Weather Advisory for Carson City area; up to 6 inches of snow possible in some areas

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for the Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton, Virginia City and Reno areas through 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

Snow showers will begin this evening with anywhere from 1 to 3 inches and possibly up to 6 inches in heavier bands, according to the weather service, which notes the higher amounts of snow may be in Douglas County.

Carson City deputies make arrests for warrants, reckless driving and domestic battery

A 28-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday, 1:03 p.m. in the 3200 block of Imperial Way on a felony fugitive from justice warrant, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Arrested was Joshua Jason Moore. The warrant was issued out of Kansas where he will be extradited.

Two cases involving stolen, forged credit cards results in three arrests

Three Sacramento area women were arrested Saturday in two separate cases involving stolen credit cards, fraud and forgery. Carson City Sheriff’s Office investigators are trying to determine if the cases are related, said Lt. Brian Humphrey.

In the first arrest, officers recovered stolen credit cards, equipment to make credit cards, as well as stolen checks from victims in Douglas County and Sacramento, according to the arrest report.

January saturation patrols around Carson City cite drivers for speeding, using cell phones

During the month of January the Carson City Sheriff’s Office conducted saturation patrols in the Carson City area. The focus of these patrols was to reduce crashes in areas that many crashes have occurred in the past.

Deputies patrolled the roadways leading to intersections where crashes have occurred as well as monitored the intersections themselves looking for traffic violations which can lead to car crashes.
