As we get a start on 2020, many have made it a New Year's resolution to read more books. Carson City Library has made it easier for those hoping to get a solid footing on their pledges and is offering prizes to boot as part of its 2020 Winter Reading Challenge.

Heading into the first weekend of 2020, there are several activities around the Carson City region lined over the next three days. Events include the Winter Round Up Run at Centennial Park, the Carson City Library 2020 Winter Reading Challenge, plus you can take a post-New Year's stroll while the weather is nice during Saturday's Downtown Carson City Wine Walk. Hello Carson City and welcome to 2020. Moving forward into Thursday, Jan. 2, we're looking at sunny skies with a high around 51. Ahead is a Board of Supervisors meeting, library and art activities and a Carson City Off-Road community discount registration party at the Fox Brewpub. The summer bike event is June 26-28, but register early Thursday and you'll get a discount. Read on for more.

The Alzheimer’s Association hosted Dementia Conversations at the Carson City Library on Dec. 11, 2019. This event was held to address areas of concern expressed by dementia caregivers and professionals who attended the Carson City Alzheimer’s Community Forum earlier this year.

Events include a toy and gift drive for homeless kids and teens, the 12th annual Christmas Carol Playalong for Strings at the Carson Mall, Carson City’s first-ever "Unsilent Night" at the Brewery Arts Center, a Só Sol dinner with entertainment at Sassafras, a "Pink Party" cancer center fundraiser at the Lighthouse Bar, comedian Dan St. Paul at the Carson Comedy Club and more.

The spirit of Christmas is in the air as we head into the final stretch of the work week. Thursday events around the capital city feature an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, a Carson City tradition with the return of Joyful Noise Holiday Community Show at the Brewery Arts Center and more.

With activities lining up around the capital city through the weekend, Thursday events around the region include a meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition in Silver Springs, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, and a Carson City CASA volunteer information hour and training seminar. The break in the stormy weather was a short one, with more precipitation later in the day Wednesday, forecasters say. Activities around Carson City on Dec. 4 include a "Red Kettle" job hiring event at the Carson City Salvation Army, a Fitness Lab grand opening on Minnesota Street, a "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, art showings, library activities, classes and more.

Snow days, snow way. At least that's what the weather forecast calls for Tuesday. We'll see mostly cloudy skies before another chance of rain or snow arrives midweek and then a larger storm in time for the weekend. As the saying goes of Nevada weather: Wait a minute and it will change. It is also #GivingTuesday. If you have a favorite organization, it's a good time to send a few dollars their way. Around town there's art showings, a fitness walk, hike, dance classes and an old school film favorite at the Brewery Arts Center hosted by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club.

Events include the 31st season of the Nutcracker Ballet, a Feast with a Hero fundraiser at Slot World, Small Business Saturday throughout Carson City and Carson Valley, photos with Santa, a Telegraph Square sign dedication, Polar Express train rides at the V&T Railroad and more!

With the season's first big winter storm expected to arrive later Tuesday evening into Thanksgiving, you can still get in activities around the capital city before the snow flies. There's a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, a job fair at the Carson Nugget, fitness and swing classes at Yaple's Ballroom, a Carson City School Board meeting and more.

Northern Nevada Development Authority has relocated its offices to downtown Carson City inside Adams Hub of Northern Nevada, 308 North Curry Street, Suite 101.

Happy Saturday, Carson City! Are you feeling in the holiday spirit yet? Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and soon after it will be the season of jingle bells, red fur hats, ugly sweaters and snow!

Residents overflowed a small conference room of the Carson City Library Friday afternoon where a public meeting was held to discuss plans for the proposed Andersen Ranch Estate subdivision. The developer, Christy Corporation LTD., hosted the meeting to discuss their lot plans. They also opened the floor to current residents of the neighborhood to voice their questions and concerns.

Heading into the weekend before Thanksgiving, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the 25th annual Carson High School Holiday Craft Fair, a “War of the Worlds” play at the Brewery Arts Center, a Chili Bingo Night fundraiser to benefit the Carson Middle School Band, laughs at the Carson Nugget and much more.

Partly sunny skies and cool temperatures are expected Thursday with a warmup in time for the weekend. Events ahead around the capital city include a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, a discussion on holiday stress and dementia offered by Carson Tahoe Expressions Memory Care, and an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered. Also ahead, Carson City's GOP will host a discussion with several political leaders representing the capital city. There will be a 'Glorious Expanse' artist reception at WNC Gallery, plus library activities and more.

Plans for a subdivision development at the Andersen Ranch property — which has generated much debate for and against — will be discussed at the Dec. 17 Carson City Planning Commission meeting.
