Carson City and Douglas County are again participating in a statewide Christmas tree recycling effort. As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to one of several drop off locations.

Sophie Schler of Reno made history on November 12, 2020 when she became one of the nation’s first female Eagle Scouts – a prestigious achievement attained by some of the country’s most noteworthy figures. Miss Sophie Schler is among hundreds of young women who will make up the Inaugural Class of female Eagle Scouts.

Dayton native and Life Scout Suzanna Stankute is making strides with Boy Scouts of America.

Stankute, 14, is one of the only girls in her council on the verge of earning her Eagle Scout rank. The Eagle Scout rank is the highest achievement attainable in the Scouts BSA program. Members who earn this rank must go through a lengthy review process and complete an Eagle Scout project.

Jacob Budd's Eagle Scout service project to improve and make repairs at Carson River Park took place Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019. Jacob worked closely with Gregg Berggren of Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department, to plan and carry out this project.

Daniel Leif Braafladt died peacefully in Carson City, Nevada on Nov. 7, 2019 at the age of 62. Dan is survived by his wife Toni, his daughter Lacy, his grandkids Emmett and Reta, and his dog Bear.

He was born in Carmichael, CA to Jeane and Phil Braafladt. Dan spent a lifetime being the best type of man there is. He could fix anything. His spirit and jolly laugh made any occasion better. His love and respect for wildlife and nature were admirable. He was an avid hunter, sports lover, and was a pretty darn good shot. His wisdom, love, and long garage talks will be missed by so many.

Classic cars of all makes and models filled Fuji Park Saturday during the sixth annual Send a Scout to Camp Car Show in Carson City.

Vintage cars and trucks lined up alongside each other while participants strolled around the park and soaked in the warm summer sun.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days, including the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival, a bluegrass festival at Bowers Mansion, Celtic favorites at the BAC, tours at the Nevada State Museum, train rides, standup comedy at the Carson Nugget, a block party at Silver Oak Golf Course, a Boy Scouts car show at Fuji Park, "'Kutz for Kids' and more.

Fifty-four Nevada Area Council Eagle Scouts were honored recently at the Eagle Scout Recognition Dinner by Scouting’s Chief Scout Executive, Michael Surbaugh, the council’s newest Distinguished Eagle Scout, UNR President, Dr. Marc Johnson, and Scouters from throughout Northern Nevada and Northeastern California.

We are running out of summer weekends. I know that’s hard to believe right now, but hoodies and everything pumpkin is just beyond the horizon. Grab summer with both hands and go enjoy this beautiful city. The Brewery Arts Center brings Dennis Johnson and the Mississippi Ramblers to the stage for tonight’s free concert. Check out the Railroad Museum for your fill of music and antique motor cars. Car lovers have two shows to choose from today: spectators will be able to enjoy both, but you’ll have to pick one if you want to enter your ride. Keep reading for more summertime fun.

Carson High School in Carson City will be "A Place to Shine" this Saturday at the third annual Show and Shine Car Show, which raises money for scholarships aimed at providing students and their families the funds they need to participate in extracurricular activities.

On Wednesday, March 14, the Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) will present a talk by Carson City’s Arts & Culture Director Mark Salinas.

His illustrated talk, "Choices, Chances, and Changes," is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors series and will take place at 6 p.m. at the Union restaurant, 302 W. Proctor St in Carson City.

There will be an informal reception for Salinas preceding the event at 5:30 p.m. No tickets needed; the public is cordially invited.

Though the level of library support varies throughout school districts in Nevada, the Carson City School District highly values school libraries as it promotes literacy through funding, a full-time library staff at each school, and certified teacher-librarians at CHS and the middle schools.

Many amazing opportunities are going on in the CHS school library. The CHS Library is piloting the Nevada Teacher-Librarian Evaluation framework and transitioning from a “library” to a collaborative learning commons. 

The valley is alive with the sound of music: the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival, to be specific. Just about everywhere you go, you’ll be treated to something to soothe the soul or get the toes tapping. Get the kids up early for the Young Eagle Flights at the Carson City Airport – they’re free, but you need to be on time for registration. Boy Scouts of America Troop 33 will host its 4th annual “Send a Scout to Camp” Car and Truck Show Fundraiser on August 12, 2017 at Fuji Park in Carson City.

The Silver State Fair Housing Council awarded its SSFHC HEART Award on Wednesday to Nevada Rural Housing Authority Deputy Director Bill Brewer.

Pack 341 is very active Cub Scout pack and part of the Boy Scouts of America. We are a family orientated pack and invite boys to join who are currently in grades Kindergarten through 4th. The Minden Youth Aviation Adventure, sponsored by the Sports Aviation Foundation, drew a sizable group of Boy Scouts to the Minden-Tahoe Airport last weekend.

Heather Wright, a 12th grade student at Pioneer High School, earned her rank as the cadet commander and Senior Master Sargent in the Civil Air Patrol, Nevada Wing.

The American Buffalo did not roam in Northern Nevada more than a century ago as the West was settled, but Nevada does lay claim to its own Silver Buffalo in 2016. That “Silver Buffalo” is Jim Rogers and the national honor was bestowed upon this Nevadan by the Boy Scouts of America at its 2016 National Annual Meeting held in San Diego.

Rogers was honored during the recent BSA National Convention in San Diego. Today, there are more than 800,000 adult volunteers in BSA, and Rogers has been an active volunteer leader for over 35 years.

Communication and leadership training are top priorities for Paul Penttila, recently named Scout Executive/CEO for the Nevada Area Council Boy Scouts of America. He brings a wealth of experience with him to Northern Nevada as he and the Council serve youth across the Silver State as well as Eastern California to the north and to the Southern Sierra Nevada.

The weekend has arrived and there are festivals everywhere. A Basque Festival and Picnic can be found in Gardnerville. Bowers Mansion hosts a Bluegrass Festival for the 31st year. Ta-Hoe Nalu Paddle Festival returns to King Beach for the weekend. The Annual Jazz and Beyond Music Festival has infiltrated the whole valley with musicians. Boy Scouts of America Troop 33, now in its 77th year, will host its 3rd annual “Send a Scout to Camp” Car and Truck Show Fundraiser on August 13 at Fuji Park in Carson City.

The generosity of one Northern Nevada resident will be providing for many young people and their activities for years to come. The Estate of Esther Schwarzer gave the Nevada Area Council of Boy Scouts of America a check for nearly $121,000 to use for programs benefiting Scouting. Receiving identical checks were the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada and Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

RENO – The National Guard Association of the United States bestowed several awards to prominent Nevadans at the organization’s 137th national conference in Nashville, Tenn. earlier this week. All were nominated by the Nevada chapter of NGAUS.

Nevada Area Council of Boy Scouts of America held its Cub Scouts Home Depot Trailblazer Adventure Day and Cub Mobile Derby at the South Reno Home Depot on Steamboat Parkway on Saturday, May 2, and it was a day devoted to Scouting and just plain fun.

Nevada Boy Scouts celebrated the awarding of not one but two Heroism Awards at Carson City Troop 341’s Court of Honor recently at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Carson City. Dozens of Scouts, Scouters and parents applauded Jeremiah Beauford and Eli Thomas as each young man received the Life Saving Award as each Scout had saved the life of his younger brother. On hand to make the special presentation was Nevada Area Council President Jeff Whitaker.

Morgan Rubenacker has joined The Builders Alliance as Marketing Director. In this role, Rubenacker is in charge of the website content and blog, social media management, public relations, and event planning.

Friday night saw the beginning of Spring Fling Week at Carson High School with the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported FBLA’s efforts to raise money for the March of Dimes. The next week is filled with events for student to celebrate springtime.
