Senator Square: Spring Fling Week underway at CHS

Friday night saw the beginning of Spring Fling Week at Carson High School with the Sadie Hawkins Dance. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported FBLA’s efforts to raise money for the March of Dimes. The next week is filled with events for student to celebrate springtime.

Carson High, are you ready for the Battle of the Senators? Throughout the events, it will be lady senators versus gentlemen senators. There will be points given to each gender for every person attending an event and for the gender with the most money donated for our pennies for patients drive each week, along with other activities and dress up days throughout spring fling.

The winning gender will be giving the title of Battle of the Senators Champions and will win serious bragging rights. The following events will take place each day of this week:

Monday: Diner Day at Johnny Rockets from 3-9 pm, all revenue will go to the sophomore class.

Tuesday: Twin Dress up day

Wednesday: Due Be Nice dress up day (Shirts are being sold in Student Store for $15 and $20)

Thursday: Mathletes v. Athletes dress up day
. Female Flag Football Meeting at Lunch in the student council room for all participants.
Mandatory meeting and all paper work and fees are due that day.

Friday: Extreme Blue and White day, Girls wear white, boys wear blue.
Pack the Performance night for Pippin's opening night at 7pm at the community center.

Monday, March 23: Hippie dress up day

Tuesday, March 24: Super Smash Bros tournament in Senator Square at 6pm, $2 entry fee.

Wednesday, March 25: Scavenger Hunt at lunch

Thursday, March 26: Female Flag Football games
, 3-5pm on the soccer field, 6-8pm on the football field. All are welcome to watch

Friday, March 27: Female Flag Football semifinals on the football field from 6-7 pm, $2 admission fee to be donated to Maddi Manke and her family

Prom Contest
Attention all Carson High Seniors: Greater Nevada Credit Union is having a free Prom Package giveaway. Every CHS senior is eligible to enter.

Attention Current Juniors
We want your ideas for your Senior song and Senior quote for Class of 2016. If you have any ideas that you want proposed for the Class of 2016, please submit them to Mrs. Britt in the student council room or at the student store as soon as possible. We really want your input and are looking forward to all of the great ideas that you have.

Polar Plunge
The National Honors Society Chapter is working to fund-raise for the annual Polar Plunge at Lake Tahoe. The Polar Plunge is a unique opportunity to support local Special Olympic athletes by jumping or running into a chilly body of water in the middle of winter. To make a donation to our NHS chapter, contact Elena Glenn at 283-1910.

Culinary Arts Win
Once again the Carson High Culinary Arts Team won the State Championship, which makes eleven Straight State Championships. To help them get to National Competition it is time for the amazing CHS students to help. On Friday, March 20 CHS will have a Hat Day. To be able to wear a hat you need to purchase a wrist band for only $1.00. They will be on sale Friday before school, at nutrition and at lunch in the student store. All money raised will help these deserving students represent CHS at Nationals. To make a donation to the Culinary program for their national trip, contact Penny Reynolds at 283-1910.

Jostens will be here Tuesday, March 17, delivering graduation announcement boxes. They will be located upstairs in the cafeteria. If you have not ordered your cap and gown and other graduation items please see Jostens on the this day.



Student of the Week
This week's student of the week is Katasha DeGraw. Katasha is a junior at CHS. She is an outstanding student who works hard in both her academics and in her extracurriculars. Katasha is engaged, motivated, and talented, and never fails to come to class prepared and ready to learn. Thanks Katasha for being a wonderful student here at Carson High!

Senior Spotlight
This week’s senior spotlight is on Trevor Sollberger. Trevor is a talented student who currently has a 4.25 GPA, working toward his honors diploma. Trevor is more than just a great student; he is an asset to our community.

Since he was a child, Trevor has been a member of Boy Scouts of America. He has completed over 250 hours of community service over the past four years, including designing and installing the directional signs on the bike path in Carson City, earning him his Eagle rank. Trevor also competes for the Carson High School tennis and swim teams, qualifying for regional competitions in both sports.

After school and during the summer, Trevor spends a lot of time with the youth, both in Carson City and out. In 2012 he spent the summer working as a merit badge instructor and camp counselor. He is a lifeguard and swim instructor for Carson City and also tutors students in the elementary schools. Trevor is an avid outdoorsman, spending much of his free time hiking, bicycling and hunting.

Trevor plans to attend UNR this fall, where he will major in Chemical Engineering. Congratulations Trevor! We are so proud of you and wish you luck in all of your future endeavors.

Motorists can expect traffic delays as Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash in Carson City that killed at least two people early Wednesday morning on I-580 southbound near Snyder Avenue and Fairview Boulevard.

Laura Ricks, TOSA/Instructional Coach at Empire Elementary School, was honored as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year, at the Tuesday, April 23, school board meeting and annual event.

Additionally, Sandra Guzzetta, special education paraprofessional at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was recognized as the Education Support Professional Employee of the Year, and Chelise Crookshanks, principal at Mark Twain Elementary School, was recognized as the district’s Administrator of the Year.

Tickets are now available for this summer’s Capital City Brewfest. This year’s event takes place June 22 on Curry Street at McFadden Plaza in Carson City. More than two dozen brewers, as well as several food trucks, will line the street from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Plus there will be live music on the McFadden Plaza stage.

The Carson City Planning Commission meeting will be held Wednesday, April 24 in the Bob Crowell Board Room of the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William St. at 5 p.m.

Western Nevada College’s Veterans Resource Center and Wildcat Veterans Club invite the community to participate in a Walk for Hope on Wednesday, May 1, at 9 a.m.

The Carson City Historical Society (CCHC) presents this afternoon tea in the Carriage House behind the Foreman-Roberts Historic House at 1207 Carson Street, Carson City.

Every month, the Park Rangers offer various Ranger-Led programs that include educational opportunities, historical fun, and exciting adventures. All programs are offered for free and take place in one of the many Carson City parks and open space areas.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Carson City will host its first "Walking as One at 1" labyrinth walk on Saturday, May 4 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 314 N. Division at Telegraph.

"Walking as One at 1" happens on World Labyrinth Day each year where participants across the globe engage in a labyrinth walk at 1 p.m. local time. This synchronized practice creates a 24-hour rolling wave of peaceful energy that passes from one time zone to the next across the world. The idea is to collectively contribute to a sense of unity and harmony.

The wise early settlers of Carson City made sure future residents would enjoy the beauty and the endless benefits that come with the planting of trees. What was then but a barren high-desert sagebrush landscape, is today a celebration of the hardiness of trees as well as the early settlers.

On Friday, April 26 at 1 p.m., the Washoe Valley Forum hosts a living history presentation, “The Reno Cure.” Local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff assume the fictive characters of wrangler Clive, and cook/housekeeper Vivian, that worked at a Washoe Valley “divorce ranch” from the 1940s to 1960s.

Local musician Liz Broscoe has released a song that features Lake Tahoe and the challenges to keep it blue, and it could become the next battle cry to protect the lake.

Liz has been working on a new album for over a year and she wrote "Mother Earth" as one of the songs for that album. She had finished writing the song when she saw the videos of the thousands of pounds of trash left on Zephyr Shoals on the 4th of July.

A local family and others aided in the search and location of a missing elderly woman Saturday night in Carson City.

Carson High School named Mikey Hoffer and Selma Works as the 2024 Prom King and Queen. A short coronation ceremony was held during the prom dance. Additionally, Rodrigo Diaz and Alissa Powers were crowned Carson High School’s Friendship Ball King and Queen during that dance Thursday evening in the Morse Burley Gym.

Carson City’s Community Development Director Hope Sullivan will be the guest speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. The public is invited to attend.
