Dayton native Suzanna Stankute on verge of earning prominent Eagle Scout rank
Dayton native and Life Scout Suzanna Stankute is making strides with Boy Scouts of America.
Stankute, 14, is one of the only girls in her council on the verge of earning her Eagle Scout rank. The Eagle Scout rank is the highest achievement attainable in the Scouts BSA program. Members who earn this rank must go through a lengthy review process and complete an Eagle Scout project.
Stankute completed her Eagle Scout project on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Dayton State Park. She helped lead a group of 49 people to pick up trash scattered around the area, painted two fences and cleaned out trails for easier access around the park.
With the help of Stankute and other scout members, Dayton State Park remains in pristine condition for interested participants to enjoy.
“We knew it would be a really big help to the park,” she said. “It was interesting to see how things progressed throughout the day and it was a lot of fun.”
At such a young age, earning the Eagle Scout rank would be a crowning achievement for Stankute’s hard work in the Dayton and Carson City areas. Following a board of review by BSA members in October, she can earn her Eagle Scout rank later this year.
“It’s an amazing opportunity that we all get to do this,” she said. “I’m proud of all the work we’ve done and it’s a great way for us to get together.”
While she waits for her rank, Stankute is staying busy with other events and organizations within Scouts BSA. She has goals of earning her merit badges that help build interest in sports, crafts, science, business and other future career opportunities.
“That’s a plan I have in mind is to keep working in the meantime,” she said. “Being involved is a way for me to meet new people and find other hobbies I’m interested in.”
Stankute joined Scouts BSA at 13 years old and has risen through the ranks in part to her drive and dedication. She worked her way from Lone Scout to the precipice of the premier Eagle Scout rank this year.
Along with her diligent work ethic, Stankute is grateful for the friendships made and memories she’s created since joining Scouts BSA.
“It was really interesting to see girls in scouts,” she said. “That’s what made me think I can do this and I want to build upon it. I’ve built many friendships and I was so happy to get started early.”
The Scouts BSA program has roots within Stankute’s family. Her brothers, Adolphas, Andrius and Adomas, are fellow scouts. She learned the basics of scouting and other events to develop a keen interest in joining a troop.
“Since I was young I’ve always known about it thanks to them,” she said. “They took me on camping trips and got me involved right away. Seeing them always work towards their goals in the troop inspires me to do my best.”
Stankute will continue to set new goals with Scouts BSA. Earning the Eagle Scout rank will be just one achievement she accomplished, but she has several more in the future.
“There’s a lot of goals I plan on working towards so it keeps me motivated,” she said. “I’m happy to do as much as I can and learn along the way.”
