Blood Drive

After an action-packed Nevada Day Saturday, Sunday traditions carry on, such as the 35th Annual La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the Carson Colony gym. Take the kids up to Virginia City for one last chance to catch Thomas the Tank Engine at the V & T Depot. It may be a little rainy, but the show must go on at the NV Day Carnival and Festival at Mills Park.

SUNDAY:

Happy Birthday Nevada. My favorite holiday has arrived, and with it a mountain of fun to be had. Normally my weekend list is sorted by chronological start time, but for this one I will be separating out the downtown parade related activities for your ease. Keep reading and have a safe and wonderful weekend.

Parade Day Fun Stuff in Downtown Carson City:

Even though Carson City is awash with Nevada Day festivities, Halloween is just as important. Here is an updated list of all the reasons to throw on a costume Saturday through Monday in Carson City and the surrounding valleys. Remember, rain is expected on Friday and Sunday, so consider an umbrella if you don’t want your make-up to run!

Let’s just call this Nevad-oween weekend. So much crazy fun awaits: whether it’s the celebration of our ‘new’ downtown, Halloween parties for kids and adults alike, or our State Museum’s 75th Anniversary. Start your day at the Museum, hang around for the downtown ribbon cutting and festivities, then join in the costumed fun as Blinky Man hits the streets. Do the time warp at the Brewery Arts Center: the Rocky Horror Picture Show Party starts at 8:30 p.m. This is going to be one amazing weekend, so let’s get this party started.

Get your home style pancakes, eggs, sausage, orange juice and coffee! Check out the Fire Engines! Halloween Costumes encouraged! Also, we will be holding a blood drive during the breakfast to support United Blood Services. Our last blood drive in August was amazing!! Let's do it again!!

It’s that time of year again. The ghosts and ghouls come out of hiding and paint the town orange. Halloween isn’t just one night around here. Combined with the festivities of Nevada Day, you can be sure to enjoy at least a week’s worth of celebrating.

Here is a comprehensive list of fall festivals, Halloween parties, and fun for all. Items in italic are for those 21 and older only.

Saturday, Oct. 22:

The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is hosting the Nevada Day Carnival and Fair for a third decade at Mills Park over the Nevada Day weekend.

Now in its 31st year, RSVP’s Nevada Day Carnival and Fair provides a fun family entertainment venue during the Silver State’s statehood celebration.

Carson High School celebrated its first Week of Respect Oct. 3-7. Students and staff participated in daily activities promoting positive interactions to support a safe and respectful learning environment. Highlights of the week included interactive game stations where students gathered in Senator Square and engaged in board games and brain teasers.

Even though homecoming has now concluded, Carson High School is by no means finished with its current and upcoming events. Not only is the CHS National Honor Society Blood Drive coming up, Oct. 6 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the small gym, but Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval proclaimed Oct. 3-7 to be the “Week of Respect” throughout the state of Nevada.

At Carson High School, they are appropriately named Link Crew, also known as the Boomerang Project, and they are one of the most underappreciated yet profoundly beneficial programs at CHS.

The kids deserve some fun for surviving their first week back at school, and Carson City delivers. The first annual Northern Nevada Family Fun Day takes over Mills Park with music, a kids zone, activities, food, raffles, and much more. Check out the Bowling Blast Off at Carson Lanes for a Car Show, bowling specials, and fun. Once the sun sets, Washoe Lake State Park offers a basic astronomy lesson and some celestial viewing. Keep reading: there’s something for everyone this weekend.

SATURDAY:

The weekend has arrived and there are festivals everywhere. A Basque Festival and Picnic can be found in Gardnerville. Bowers Mansion hosts a Bluegrass Festival for the 31st year. Ta-Hoe Nalu Paddle Festival returns to King Beach for the weekend. The Annual Jazz and Beyond Music Festival has infiltrated the whole valley with musicians. Check out the Douglas County Junior Rodeo or Carson Valley Ag Day in Gardnerville. Continue on down the list for all of the area’s happenings.

SATURDAY:

Whoo-hoo Wednesday. June First brings the inaugural Wednesday Evening Farmers Market to downtown. Look for it at Third Street after 4 p.m. The Battle of the Badges Blood Drive is at the Community Center: the Sheriff’s Office vs. the Fire Department. Help Comma Coffee welcome a new artist to their Backseat Gallery this evening: every first Wednesday you can a attend their artist reception. Sing a song for summer at Crossroads: J and M Productions hosts karaoke tonight.

WEDNESDAY:

It's a friendly wager with blood in the mix. In its second year, the Carson City Battle of the Badges Blood Drive is happening Wednesday, June 1 from noon to 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center.

These Ides of March have nothing to be wary of. Check out S.T.E.A.M. Night at Eagle Valley Middle School for hands on activities to learn from. Nevada Neighbors, Capital City Arts Initiative’s lecture series, features a talk by Paul Baker Prindle, Director and Curator of University Galleries, UNR’s art museum. Take an early spring stroll at Fuji Park during this week’s Carson City Parks and Recreation Easy Walk.

TUESDAY:

Ready to ‘Give where you live’? Nevada’s Big Give online fundraising drive is today, so pick your favorite local non-profit and pledge $10 or more dollars to get them on their way. The WNC Foundation will be throwing a party at Alatte inside the Carson Nugget with drink specials and more if they’re the one you choose. Learn a little about our majestic mountain views at the Douglas County Historical Society’s Second Thursday lecture. Spice up your life with Bachata lessons at El Charro Avita, and dance the night away. Take a gander at the list for all of today’s options.
THURSDAY:

Got kids? The Boys and Girls Club is where you want to be today for the Second Annual Early Childhood Expo. Curious George and Clifford the big red dog can’t wait to say hello. Take a trip out to the Dayton State Park to search for animal tracks and more with a park ranger. If you’re kid free today, then the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk is for you. The young and the young-at-heart will find something fun to do this weekend: just check out the whole list for your options and hit the town.

SATURDAY:

Have a great Wednesday, Carson City. I want to remind you that Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, so make your dinner reservations soon if you are planning a night out. Enjoy some lunchtime live music with Dave Leather at Comma Coffee. Dinner music can be found at Glen Eagles, Crossroads Lounge, and Living the Good Life. The hot ticket in town tonight is the Carson High Annual Talent Show. Head over to the Community Center to be impressed by the talented students we have here.

WEDNESDAY:

Get your blood pumping today with a noon stroll with the Wellness Mile Walking Group at Carson Tahoe Hospital. It’s National Blood Donor Month: help your fellow Nevadans and donate some blood at Carson Mall where you’ll find the Bloodmobile parked near Dutch Bros. Coffee. Feed your craving for live music at Living the Good Life, Sassafras, and Glen Eagles.

WEDNESDAY:

National Honor Society is hosting its winter blood drive. It will take place on January 28 in the library from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. It is open to community members.  Refreshments and a free cholesterol test is available with each donation. Appointments can be made online at bloodhero.com, Blood drive: Carson High School, Code word: Senators. Please come and support such a worthy cause. Find the hero in you and save three lives!

A lot of people will tell you it’s never a good idea to play with fire, but for the folks of Controlled Burn, fire can be art. A new community practice group is starting up at A to Zen and everyone is welcome to come learn what it takes to dance with fire. The Carson City Classical Cinema Club is growing and has moved its monthly movie viewings to the Black Box Theater at the Brewery Arts Center. If you aren’t a member yet, it is just five dollars to enjoy Prince and the Pauper tonight.

Farmers Insurance Agents of Carson City are hosting a blood drive with United Blood Services at 112 West Telegraph Street in Carson City, Nevada on November 5th, 2015 1:30PM-5:30PM. This week marks the 30th year that Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program, also known as RSVP, hosts a Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park in Carson City.

Festivities begin Thursday with “Family Night” from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. where all rides are $1 each courtesy of Carson-City Toyota Scion.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office and United Blood Service will hold a Honor Blood Drive in memory of Deputy Carl Howell on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 8 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the bloodmobile that will be located in the courthouse parking lot at the corner of Roop and Musser streets. The Find a Hero Drive also provides for free cholesterol testing. To sign up call Marie at (775) 283-7862.

This week is the official Nevada Week of Respect. The purpose of this week is to promote respect as an antidote to bullying and cyberbullying. Here is what is going on at CHS to celebrate the Week of Respect:

• The American Sign Language club is going to be signing songs at lunch on Thursday.
• The Gay-Straight Alliance is going to be putting up a respect wall - a giant poster for people to write what they respect about someone else.
• There will be a daily announcement with a tip on being an upstanding young adult.
