Dream, work, achieve: a story for our children

Nevada has some amazing people. This is a story about one of them, Dr. Thomas Schwenk, Dean of Nevada’s medical school – a story he tells to inspire beginning medical students and others.

Thirty years ago, after completing their medical residencies, Schwenk and a partner opened an office in a small northern Utah town. They were the only physicians in a large area, the closest hospital was an hour away, and even helicopter transport took time to arrange.

Irish History and Humor for St. Patrick's Day

Gairin Celtic Music will be at Red's 395 for St. Patrick's Day

Here's a wee bit o' Irish history in honor of St. Patrick's Day, brought to you by the Gairin Celtic Musicians Tom and Mary Kay Aufrance. When did St. Patrick live?

There is a popular notion that St. Patrick, the Apostle of Ireland, was born sometime in the 4th or 5th Century at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton. But now! Think about that! The village of Kilpatrick is on the River Clyde, which is in Scotland! If this is his true birthplace, then Ireland's patron saint would actually be Scottish! Begorrah!

Outdoors with Don Q: Escaping from winter to a tropical paradise

If you're getting tired of our winter cold, frost, ice and snow (what little we have received so far), you might want to consider a vacation trip to Hawaii.

Elaine and I, our son Jim, daughter-in-law Kathi and my cousin Lorraine Scholes and her husband Bob just returned, earlier this week, from a fun-filled 14-day vacation trip to Honolulu on the Island of Oahu (4 days) and to Poipu on the Island of Kauai (10 days).

Sen. Harry Reid speaks about Nevada's Sesquicentennial on the Senate floor

Volunteers are in the mix of Nevada’s 150th Birthday Cake

Misti Gower is known by co-workers at Nevada’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources as a cake baker extraordinaire. So, no one was surprised when she and Heidi Englund of the Nevada Historical Society agreed to create a 13 foot wide by 21 foot long cake in the shape of Nevada to commemorate the great cake caper of 1964.

The monumental undertaking has started to come together as DCNR colleagues and others have jumped in to help bake, build and serve the 1,300 pound confection.

Nevada 150 events through March

Many events are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of March. These Nevada 150 events help celebrate all things Nevada and bring awareness to the state’s 150th Anniversary of Statehood. Here are some events scheduled for around Carson City and Northern Nevada:

Outdoors with Don Q: Reserve March 1 for a highly-popular fundraiser

This is an annual reminder of my all-time favorite fund raiser. The highly-popular and fun-filled, Carson Valley Chukar Club fundraiser will be held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Saturday, March 1. This year’s fund raiser will be its 28th version.

Chukar:
If you are brand-new to this area, about now you are probably wondering what in the world is something called a "Chukar?"

Outdoors with Don Q: Late winter offers lots of opportunities for staying busy

If you're not into traditional winter sports such as ice fishing, ice skating, downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling, there is not a lot to do in late winter...for most people.

Some choose to stare out the window, complain about the snow, ice, frost and darkness of wintertime and stay glued to their TV sets. However, there are plenty of activities to take your mind off our cold weather, dark mornings and evenings, if you would like to do so.

Bear nearly 'crashes' Nevada Day Parade

Nevada celebrates its birthday every year with the Nevada Day Parade down the main drag of the state capital, Carson City. This year, a Sierra Nevada 400 pound male black bear nearly “crashed” the parade, the Nevada Department of Wildlife reports.

Early Saturday morning, reports began coming in to the Carson City Sheriff’s office that there was a bear in east Carson, near Lone Mountain Cemetery, about a half mile from the parade route, said NDOW spokesman Chris Healy.
