Navy vessel to be named USNS Carson City; Secretary praises capital city and Nevada

The U.S. Navy will name a Joint High Speed Vessel after Nevada’s Capital, Carson City. The vessel will be called The United States Naval Ship Carson City.

Nevada Sen. Harry Reid and Congressman Mark Amodei were both informed this week of the USNS Carson City decision by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus during a meeting in the U.S. Capitol.

Outdoors with Don Q: Having fun, again, in Southern California

Elaine and I spent March 28-April 07 on a fun-filled, springtime return to Southern California for several reasons:
1. To celebrate our 11th Wedding Anniversary (March 30).
2. To visit my cousin Lorraine Scholes and her husband Bob, who have a winter home in Indio.
3. To attend our first-ever "Palm Springs Follies" show in Palm Springs.
4. To fly from Indio to Big Bear (our first-ever visit there).

Students win big at Northern Nevada FIRST TECH Challenge Robotics Championship

The FIRST NV organization, organized the Second Annual Northern Nevada FIRST TECH Challenge was held Saturday at Carson High School in Carson City. High school teams from Nevada, California, Oregon, and Utah competed in a full day robotics competition for two seeds to the World Festival Robotics Competition to be held in April.

Pilot identified in Douglas County airplane crash

The pilot found dead in the wreckage of the downed airplane found in the Pinenut Mountain Range in Douglas County Thursday has been positively identified as Keith Jorgenson, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Jorgenson, 46, was reported as the lone pilot of the plane when it left the Minden Airport on Wednesday evening.

Troy Abney was named as chief of the Nevada Highway Patrol after a national search. Abney has 28 years of law enforcement experience, including serving as the assistant chief of the California Highway Patrol where he led 786 sworn and non-sworn members.

Carson High Visited by Army National Guard

Carson High School students and faculty were treated to an aviation display when the Nevada Army National Guard flew in its CH47 Chinook helicopter for a few hours this afternoon.

The Carson City stopover was part of a planned community awareness day at the high school, where students could see up close the transport helicopter and ask questions among Guard staff and recruiters and inquire about opportunities.
