Heading into Monday, it sure does feel like Christmas around the capital City. With only two shopping days left until Christmas be sure stop by the Carson Mall for the final days of its Holiday Craft Show. Weather wise we're looking at some valley snow showers into the afternoon and evening. Activities include a spirited discussion by local historian CW Bayer about the origins of Reno's tawdry reputation, plus Carson Cigar Company will hold its annual Ugly Sweater Christmas Party. Happy Saturday Carson City, and Happy Winter Solstice! Are you all geared up for the holiday season? We've got some great events happening this weekend throughout the region, check them out below!

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a toy and gift drive for homeless kids and teens, the 12th annual Christmas Carol Playalong for Strings at the Carson Mall, Carson City’s first-ever "Unsilent Night" at the Brewery Arts Center, a Só Sol dinner with entertainment at Sassafras, a "Pink Party" cancer center fundraiser at the Lighthouse Bar, comedian Dan St. Paul at the Carson Comedy Club and more.

Dozens of Bently Nevada employees helped deliver Christmas to 11 Douglas County and Carson City families this week. The families were selected by the Ron Wood Family Resource Center based on their economic and social circumstances.

With activities lining up around the capital city through the weekend, Thursday events around the region include a meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition in Silver Springs, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, and a Carson City CASA volunteer information hour and training seminar. Along the music front, CHS Band will host its winter concert at the Carson City Community Center and our own local country music star and Nashville recording artist Art Mulcahy will be at Jimmy G's. Enjoying the mix of sunshine, clouds and the overall late fall conditions around the capital city? More of the same is expected Wednesday into Thursday, with another system due in time for the weekend. Activities around Carson City include an educational discussion on dementia presented by the Alzheimer's Association at the Carson City Library, a moonlight walk to C-Hill, a "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, art showings, a Carson Valley Community Theatre audition call for two plays, classes and more.

Over 12 years ago, Denise DiMarzo recognized that the holidays aren’t always a joyous occasion for every family. While working as an office manager for a local elementary school in Carson City and speaking with children every day, DiMarzo realized that that many families struggled to get through the holidays.

Partly sunny skies and a daytime high in the mid-40s looks to be the order of the day around the capital city as we roll into Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019. Happenings around town include a book presentation by urban fantasy author SM Reine at the Nevada State Library and Archives, a morning fitness walk and evening hike, dance classes, a meeting of the CCSD board, plus festive December music and more with Night Lights Holiday Jazz and Poetry at Carson City's Comma Coffee. In December, Mondays don't really seem like Monday. At least for those of us caught up in the holiday spirit of giving and kindness. What a weekend of community fellowship this was among Carson City locals and we're just getting started, counting down the days until Christmas.

The days keep moving along, ever closer to the weekend and huge helpings of Christmas holiday activities. Thursday events around the capital city include a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, a meeting with the developer of the proposed Andersen Ranch, a presentation: "Feathers and Furs of the Carson Valley" at the River Fork Ranch, an "End to Prohibition Party" at Gather restaurant, and more.

Dayton Urgent Care is hosting its annual Angel Tree for the kids in the Dayton, Nev. community. Last year was a great year for these families and kids that needed a little help.

We are always thankful to the community for helping out with all of our drives that we do. I am hoping that this year will be as great as it was last year.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will discuss a pair of lawsuit settlements at their meeting tomorrow beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, at 851 E. William Street.

Good Day Carson City! Say hello to Carrot, our Pet of the Week this week! Carrot is an adorable two-year-old Australian Cattle Dog/Mix and she has been looking for her forever home since October. Look at that face! Take her home!


The Carson City Raiders Booster Club's Christmas Commitment Fundraiser for Home Bound Seniors will be taking place on Sunday, Nov. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Carson Lanes Eleventh Frame Lounge, 4600 Snyder Avenue in Carson City.

Are you looking for a cat? What a coincidence: we have about 400 cats here at our shelter who are looking for you! To help our cats find homes, we are waiving the adoption fees on all cats and kittens at the shelters in Carson City and Reno this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-10.

In response to the seasonal transition affecting daylight hours, the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range will temporarily change its hours for public use — starting Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019 hours will be Sundays only, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To ensure adequate and safe accommodations for range enthusiasts, the range must adopt the new operational hours to hinder activity at night.

Looking for the love of your life? Hundreds of dogs and cats are waiting for you at animal shelters and rescue groups in Nevada, where pet adoptions will be free this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27-28 during Maddie's Pet Adoption Days. All adoption fees are waived for pets going to loving new homes thanks to a grant from Dave and Cheryl Duffield Foundation.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space department is excited to announce our Adopt-A-Park program!

As part of our Adopt-A-Park program, we have five of our smaller parks available for adoption.

These parks will be open to families, individuals and organizations to adopt.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Waters Supplies Association (TWSA) are in the process of distributing an initial run of 250 cigarette butt collection canisters at key locations around Lake Tahoe. The aim of the Tahoe Cigarette Disposal Program is to reduce toxic chemicals from littered cigarette butts from leaching into the environment, to protect wildlife, and to reduce litter on Lake Tahoe’s shoreline and vicinity.
