4th of July

The 4th of July was celebrated earlier this month with all its traditional foods, including watermelon. It’s a good thing that watermelon is a part of this summer holiday’s food mix because its health benefits may have helped counteract the impacts of the assortment of less-than-healthy foods we eat that day.

Dozens of competitors brought their hunger to the Carson Mall in Carson City Tuesday afternoon for the first ever inaugural July 4th Nevada Hotdog Eating Contest.

While thousands will gather Tuesday night at Mills Park in Carson City to watch the 4th of July fireworks display, the Nevada Humane Society urges pet owners to keep their furry friends away from the thunderous booms and flashing sparks of rockets shot into the air.

Fireworks can be quite overwhelming, and possibly hazardous and even life-threatening to pets, according to the Nevada Humane Society.

‘We hold these truths to be self-evident…’ With those few powerful words, the Declaration of Independence set a few east coast colonies on a path to becoming ‘the land of the free, and the home of the brave.’ Less than 100 years later, the great ‘Battle Born’ state of Nevada would join the fold. Let us celebrate our great country today with family, friends, and neighbors. You’ll find fireworks displays in Carson City, Virginia City, Reno, Sparks, and both the North and South shores of Lake Tahoe.

It may just be the third of July, but our country’s birthday celebrations have already started. You’ll find the annual RSVP Carnival at Mills Park with games, rides, cotton candy, and hours of skateboarding feats of daring-do. It’s an old-fashioned Fourth of July Party at the Senior Center in Dayton, complete with a show-n-shine and yummy bar-be-que. Head up to Kings Beach in Lake Tahoe for the early-bird fireworks show and beach bash.

Sunny, hot days are expected for Carson City and western Nevada region as high pressure gradually builds bringing dry conditions with it. Temperatures will continue to warm and remain above normal through the Tuesday, the July 4 holiday and beyond.

Fourth of July celebrations abound in the Carson City area. Fireworks can be found in Carson City, Virginia City, Reno, Sparks, and at both north and south shore of Lake Tahoe. There are several daytime events going on, so grab the kids, friends, and family and have a great four-day Independence Day weekend!

After Tahoe's July Fourth festivities, our beaches are thrashed with trash, which can hurt wildlife and lake clarity. Each year, hundreds of Tahoe residents and visitors turn out for our largest cleanup of the year to remove litter from our beaches. Help Keep Tahoe Blue by joining a beach cleanup site!

Motorists statewide took heed of messaging and partnerships from Nevada law enforcement agencies: As of Tuesday state public safety officials report that during the 2016 Independence Day holiday weekend there were no crash related fatalities on Nevada’s highways.

Back to back weekends filled with events at Mills Park in Carson City culminates this weekend with the annual RSVP 4th of July Carnival and Celebration, which launches Friday.

This will be the 24th year that RSVP has sponsored the holiday weekend carnival, complete with fireworks on Monday, July 4, plus plenty of rides, music, food booths, arts and crafts vendors and demonstrations throughout the weekend.

After the July 4th festivities, our beaches are thrashed with trash. This trash can hurt wildlife and lake clarity. Be a part of the solution and help us this day to keep our beaches clean.

Where can you see fireworks shot off a moving steam-powered train? Only in Ely! This annual train is generally a sell-out and offers 'front row' seats to the fireworks that are shot off of the back of the moving train. RSVP organizers for July 4 activities in Carson City would like to continue the tradition and host a fireworks display for the 24th year but it needs the help of the community and donations in order to do so.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reports the 2015, 4th of July celebration in Douglas County went well. The celebratory crowds in the Stateline, Round Hill and Zephyr Cove areas of Lake Tahoe were large and with exception of a few altercations in the downtown casino core area, Nevada Beach and Zephyr Cove Beach, the crowd was relatively well behaved.

Hello fellow anglers, I would like to say to all the firefighters on the Washington fire, Thank you for saving Markleeville and the outlying community of Alpine County.

On Sunday I took a drive up to the Wolf Creek area. The fire hit and missed all along the east fork of the Carson River. Most of the river area was untouched by the fire, although there were a few areas that had burned down to the river's edge.

Carson City Fire Chief Bob Schreihans cautions residents and visitors about what he fears could be a “catastrophic fire season” after four consecutive years of severe drought.
With record-breaking temperatures, gusty winds and lightning anticipated for the next several days, residents should be prepared as well as visitors to the Carson City area, Schreihans said.

The 4th of July is quickly approaching, Sheriff Ron Pierini and members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office wish to take a moment to remind and educate our residents and guests that the possession and or discharge of fireworks in Douglas County is unlawful and will not be tolerated.

Persons found in violation of the fireworks ordinance face criminal penalties, including a fine of up to $1,000 and/or confinement in the county jail for a period of up to six months.
