What Works: Celebrate Simple Pleasures Today and Every Day
It’s Christmas Day! This morning, I woke up and did a short video about what matters today and every day. This is a holiday filled with grand gestures. However, to me, it’s not the grand gestures we should strive for every day. It’s the simple pleasures of life that spread the spirit of joy, giving, peace, and love year-round.

I am so grateful I can spread the joy, in little ways, every Monday through this column. I can’t believe my column is entering its fourth year! I love meeting people in the community and hearing how this column impacts them. It doesn’t get a lot of comments, certainly not as many as the police reports. So, often I wonder if anyone is listening. The little joy of hearing from my readers, often in person, keeps me going.
Little joys are so important.
They are things like doggie kisses out of nowhere, hugs from kids, and an excellent cup of cocoa. Even though I have the sniffles today, it’s a pack of soft tissues. It’s the fact that I have Internet access, not just to watch Netflix and chill, but to send this column to you. It’s the sound of my dog chomping on the massive rawhide bone I got her for Christmas. It’s a peaceful home. It’s food in the fridge. It’s all the love and text messages back when I text my friends, “Merry Christmas.” It’s the fact that my friend connected me with a driver who will get me to the airport at 4 am tomorrow for my trip.
How many little joys can you count today?
Little joys pile up. We don’t have to wait for the fireworks or the big expressions of love. Pay attention to hugs that linger, smiles, and eye contact. Pay attention to the joys in human connection, laughter and tears, the whole package. I used to want fireworks every day. But I realized, over time, that big gestures every day can become commonplace. I don’t want to live a commonplace life.
Life is about extraordinary consciousness of every day gestures.
It’s about reaching out to those in need, not being afraid to say you are in need yourself. It’s about volunteering your time, whether it’s to wash the dishes or feed those less fortunate. It’s about holding someone’s hand, listening, and showing love in little ways.
What would the world be like if we lived like this every day?
Fill your world with the little joys and you will soon see you are living a very joyous life. This is my Ebenezer Scrooge moment. I commit every day to noticing, appreciating, and returning the small gestures in life. The little things become the big things that matter most. Merry Christmas, Carson City.
