State museums participating in first Museum Store Sunday
CARSON CITY — Make some room Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. There’s a new kid on the holiday shopping block. Say hello to Museum Store Sunday.
On Sunday, Nov. 26, more than 500 museum stores worldwide are participating in the event. That includes four of Nevada’s state museums – Nevada State Museum Carson City, Nevada State Museum Las Vegas, Lost City Museum in Overton and Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City.
“Museum Store Sunday is a new international campaign and we’re offering a new holiday shopping experience for everyone,” said Lara Brown, store manager at the Nevada State Railroad Museum.
Shoppers will not only get discounted prices at the museum stores, but have the opportunity to pick up unique and “only-in-Nevada” items they are unlikely to find elsewhere. From Nevada-themed books to clothing to specialty items, the museum stores offer something for all ages.
At the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, that includes silver medallions struck on the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1, a relic from the building’s day as the U.S. Mint. A change in the coin press to a smaller-sized medallion earlier this year means the silver-dollar-sized medallions are being phased out.
“We still have quite a few of the 1-ouncers left,” said Bob Nylen, curator of history at the Nevada State Museum. “We won’t be doing those in the future, so those really will be collector items.”
Free gift wrapping is included with store purchases and special activities are for children are planned.
The two Carson City museum stores will be open Sunday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., with discounts on every purchase.
Lost City Museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes free admission to the museum for shoppers and a 15-percent discount on all items in the store.
Nevada State Museum Las Vegas is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
