A 21-year-old Carson City man, Elijah Joseph Barnes, was arrested Thursday 11:36 p.m. in the 100 block of Conestoga Drive on felony charges of burglary, possession of stolen property, and misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and destruction of property.
According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatch to the area and met with the victim who said he had returned from the store to find his front door forced open and that his Xbox One, about six games, and 2 controllers were missing. Deputies could see the victim’s front door was damaged and the frame itself had been forced inward, disabling the deadbolt, the arrest report states.

Officers later watched surveillance and saw the suspect walk by the victim’s apartment several times. The video surveillance does not show the victim’s door. It was learned the suspect lived in a nearby apartment and him and three of his friends arrived in a black Lincoln SUV. A witness said he believed the subjects were selling drugs because they were constantly coming and going from the apartment and bringing people around.
Deputies waited for them to go inside the apartment and an interior sniff of the Lincoln produced a positive alert, the arrest report states.

Deputies walked to the door and smelled marijuana coming from inside. A deputy spoke with Barnes who said he was walking by the victim’s apartment with his backpack because he was selling things and he suggested he knew about his neighbor’s Xbox though he didn’t explain how he knew. Barnes denied consent to search for the Xbox or marijuana. The officer requested and received a search warrant for the Xbox items and narcotics in the apartment and the black Lincoln.

Officers found the stolen Xbox confirmed by serial number that hidden in the suspect’s bag of dog food. Officers also found several pieces of drug paraphernalia including cases with residue and a scale. Barnes was arrested on charges of burglary, possession of stolen property, possess of drug paraphernalia and destruction of property for breaking the door frame.

At jail the deputy questioned Barnes under Miranda about what he had done with the video games and controllers. Barnes told the officer that he already sold the equipment and wouldn’t help retrieve it because he’d lose money if he did, according to the arrest report. Bail: $46,132.
