— A Santa Clara, Calif., man was arrested Tuesday afternoon on a misdemeanor stalking charge after allegedly harassing his ex-girlfriend who is dying of cancer at Carson Tahoe Hospital. The woman told officers the suspect had been sneaking into her room and told her he was going to commit suicide and go with her, according to the arrest report.

The woman told officers that she has no time for the man and can’t deal with his mental issues and doesn’t want him around anymore and that he is not wanted in the hospital room, the arrest report states.

Hospital security was advised of the situation and noted the man was observed entering the hospital through the main doors. He was confronted by security and exited the building, where he got into his Jeep and began to drive away. Security then began to follow the man in a marked vehicle while contacting the Sheriff’s Office and making notification that he was on hospital property. The suspect was taken into custody after officers caught up with him driving eastbound on Medical Parkway.

When officers informed him he was going to be charged with stalking, the suspect told officers the charge would never stick and that there is no evidence other than statements from the woman.

He was taken to jail for booking. During a review of the man’s criminal history officers located a prior charge for stalking out of Douglas County with a “no disposition record on file.” Without the disposition the officer was only able to charge the man with first offense stalking violation. He was also driving on an expired driver’s license. Officers then requested a 12-hour hold be placed on the man for the stalking violation.

In the event the man posts bail, the woman and hospital will be notified. The woman said she was leaving the hospital for hospice and was going to file a restraining order against the man in Douglas County. Bail: $2,692.

— Those arrested and facing criminal charges are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
