Carson City man jailed after admitting to stealing cash from employer to pay drug debt

A Carson City man faces felony embezzlement, burglary and forgery charges after admitting to stealing $700 from his employer and then cooking up a story about how he was robbed and abducted. He admitted to stealing the money to pay off a drug debt.
Paul Joseph Bloomfield, 44, was arrested Sept. 13 in the 300 block of North Carson Street. He is also accused of attempting to cash a $1,000 stolen check from a dance studio.
According to the Carson City Sheriff's Office arrest report, officers responded to a sushi restaurant in reference to a report of a possible robbery. Officers met with Bloomfield who claimed that on Sept. 12 at around 10 p.m. after he closed the restaurant he was intercepted by two Hispanic men. He said the men ordered him back into the restaurant and then forced him to take out the cash from the till and the night drop of the restaurant, which was about $700.
Bloomfield told officers that after giving the money to the unknown suspects, he was abducted and taken to the Brunswick Canyon area where he was dropped off. He told officers that it took him all night to walk back to the area of Telegraph and Carson streets where he took it upon himself to look for the suspects, according to the arrest report.
After being confronted about discrepencies to his story, Bloomfield finally admitted to having stolen the cash to pay for a drug debt, the report states. He was then taken back to the restaurant at which time the owner proceeded to file a complaint of the stolen money.
Once outside of the location, an officer was contacted by a woman who owns a dance studio that had been broken into and reported that a business check had been stolen. The woman provided officers with a copy of a stolen check made out to Paul Bloomfield for $1,000.
According to the victim, Bloomfield attempted to cash the check at the local Money Tree earlier that same morning. At that time staff of Money Tree contacted the victim and were advised by the victim that she did not know Paul Bloomfield and she had not written the check. The victim then placed a stop on the check.
Officers read Bloomfield his Miranda rights, where he said he was given the dance studio check at which time he attempted to cash it. He stated after being denied at the Money Tree, he destroyed the suspected check. He denied having stolen the check but admitted to having attempted to cash the check.
He attributed his actions to being a drug user who owed a $1,000 drug debt to an unknown dealer. He was arrested for embezzlement, burglary and uttering a forged instrument, all felonies, and misdemeanor filing a false crime report. Bail: $51,137.
