Fundraiser for Smithwick-Francone family Aug. 8 at Firehouse Subs in Carson City
A fundraiser to help the Smithwick-Francone family will be held Wednesday, Aug. 8 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Firehouse Subs, 3120 U.S. Highway 50 East in Carson City.
The Firehouse Subs restaurant will donate 20 percent of all proceeds during the fundraiser to help with the needs of the Smithwick-Francone family involved in a fatal motor vehicle crash near the California and Oregon border on July 29, 2018.
The family's two children, Jonathan and Kaitlyn Francone, suffered major injuries in the crash, which claimed the life of one Oregon teenager, identified as 17 year-old Gabbi Smithwick, who family members said spent much of her life in the Carson City and Douglas County areas before moving to Oregon.
Kaitlyn, who has Muscular Dystrophy, suffered a broken jaw in two places requiring surgery. Jonathan was last listed in critical condition, suffering a fractured skull, a broken leg and broken ribs injuries.
Jonathan and Kaitlyn's parents, Brian and Kristin Smithwick, were also injured in the crash. Brian suffered multiple broken ribs and underwent surgery to remove his spleen. Kristin suffered minimal injuries in the crash.
A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family. To date, the fund has raised more than $21,000 of its $50,000 goal.
