Nevada high school fall sports will be moved to March, amongst other scheduling changes
Fall high school sports are now temporarily postponed in Carson City, Lyon, Douglas and Storey counties as well as the rest of Nevada. State playoffs are not expected to take place this year, as well. The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association announced Thursday that all fall sports in Nevada will be played in March of 2021 to lower the spread of COVID-19.
All spring sports in Nevada were forced to cancel midway through their 2019-20 academic seasons when the pandemic hit the state.
Fall sports in Nevada that are affected include football, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls golf, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls cross country and girls volleyball.
"Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant challenges faced by NIAA member schools, the NIAA has made the following adjustments to sports seasons for the 2020-21 school year," the NIAA said in a press statement on Thursday. "Specific schedules for leagues and/or regions within the framework below will be created and implemented by the leagues and/or regions in each sport. Several options were reviewed.
Several schedule adjustments will be put in place to balance both fall and spring high school sports in Nevada. Below is a list of schedules for the winter, fall and spring sports seasons.
Winter Sports
Winter sports will consist of six competitive weeks. Practice begins on Jan. 2, 2021 and the first contest may be held Jan. 15, 2021. The last contest of the season is scheduled for Feb. 20,2021.
Fall Sports
Fall sports will consist of six competitive weeks. Football practice begins Feb. 13, 2021 and all other fall sports will have their first practice on Feb. 20, 2021. The first contest may be held March 5, 2021. The last contest of the season is scheduled for April 10, 2021.
Spring Sports
Spring sports will consist of six competitive weeks. Practice begins April 13, 2021 and the first contest may be held April 16, 2021. The last contest is scheduled for May 22, 2021.
Along with schedule changes, the NIAA announced that there is a growing anticipation that out-of-state tournaments will not be played this season. The NIAA also announced that practices and competitions are subject to government directive, orders from state and local health departments, the restrictions associated with the phase of reopening in place at the time, and local district and school mandates.
Playoff considerations are at the discretion of individual classifications, regions and/or leagues. The six competitive weeks will not include any playoffs
