Bay Area correctional officer, U.S. Army veteran identified as Lake Tahoe drowning victim
A correctional officer with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office in the San Francisco Bay Area has been identified as the man who died of an apparent drowning at Lake Tahoe's Zephyr Cove on Tuesday.
"It is with great sadness we announce the death of Correctional Officer Andreiam Jeffrey “AJ” Arqueza. AJ passed (Tuesday) afternoon in a drowning accident while enjoying days off with friends in the Lake Tahoe area," said the San Mateo County Code 30 Foundation on a Facebook post.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office escorted the ambulance carrying AJ to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.
AJ was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Iraq War. He first worked for the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and moved to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office in 2017.
He is survived by his wife of seven years and two children, ages 3 and 5. Funeral services are planned for Friday, July 26.
Donations to the family can be made to the Code 30 Foundation, an IRS 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization, Tax ID # 46-2834289. They can be made online at https://www.code30.org/donate-now or sent via mail to San Mateo County Code 30 Foundation, 2421 Broadway Street, Redwood City, CA 94063.
