Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra area fishing report

Hello fellow anglers, winter came back and stirred up the fishing. I now think that is behind us, for at least a week or so. This time of year never trust Mother Nature and always be prepared. I have been caught off guard back in the high country as well as an overnighter at Indian Creek Reservoir.

One day we were in shorts enjoying a beautiful warm spring day, to wake up to four inches of snow the next morning. remember to always tell someone where you are going and when you are to return. Bring warm clothes plenty of water and a few energy bars. One never knows what could happen, but we can be prepared if it does. 

LAKE TAHOE: 
Mackinaw action has been good. Anglers have been trolling in 150 to 250 feet. Best areas have been Dollar and Sugar Pine Point. They have been trolling a dodger with a minnow or chrome or white Flat Fish lures. Average mackinaw has been 2-6 pounds with a few in the 6 to 18 pound class.
The kokanee action has picked up for anglers fishing off Camp Richardson. Some anglers have done fair top lining early in the morning or late evening.
Reminder that Sand Harbor boat launch is open for small boats only and will be closing this year on July 1 2014,due to low water level. I would recommend Cave Rock to launch your boat.

SILVER LAKE:
The lake level is high and the boat launch is open. The lake has been planted by the CDFG.
Shore anglers have been doing well around the park area with power bait or salmon eggs. The only report I have for boaters is that the wind was blowing 30 mph last weekend and we decided not to launch.

CAPLES LAKE: 
The lake is at it capacity. The Caples Lake Marina and general store is open for launching,  boat rentals, snacks and fishing supplies. The ramp is open 7:30 to 5:30 seven days a week.
The CDFG has planted the lake heavily with nice rainbow trout.
Sonny Findley caught a nice limit throwing a Kastmaster lure near Woods Creek area. David Hawks and Jim McGarvey rented a boat and caught a good stringer of rainbows trolling rainbow Rapalas. Paul Katosh from Kirkwood caught a 5 pound mackinaw trolling a hand painted Kastmaster near Woods Creek area.

BLUE LAKES:  
The road is open to the upper lake.
The CDFG planted the lake this week.
The campground is open for dry camping.
The road is paved to the lower lake followed by a dirt road to the upper.
Bring mosquito repellent and plenty of warm clothes. The day time temps are great bit the nights tend to get a little chilly.

RED LAKE:
Very few reports have come in from this area.
The lake has rainbow, brown, brook and cutthroat trout.

CARSON RIVER CALIFORNIA SIDE:  
The east fork has cleared up very nice and the flows are still good.
The CDFG planted the east and the west fork with 1600 pounds of rainbow trout.
Anglers have done well with worms-power bait-salmon eggs or throwing Panther Martin spinners.
A fly angler was throwing nymphs and caught a 3lb, 4lb, and a 5lb trout and broke off an estimated 9 lb trout.
Fishing is good.
The west fork has been producing nice fish near the bridges and down in Woodfords Canyon area.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR
The water level is up and the fishing has picked up.
The Alpine County Fish Commission planted the lake on June 7th.
The campground is open for tent and dry RV camping. They have restrooms and heated showers for guests.
The boat ramp is open near the campground.
The lake is starting to get weedy so watch your prop. 

UPPER TRUCKEE RIVER, TAYLOR CREEK, TROUT CREEK:  
All streams in the south Tahoe basin are closed until July 1 2014. 

ECHO LAKE:  
Located on top of Echo summit off highway 50. A special friend gave me a great report. They fished last week and caught  their limit of nice rainbow trout. They were using Panther Martin spinners or power bait.

ROAD CLOSURES IN ALPINE COUNTY:  
All are open except for Forestdale Road.

ALPINE COUNTY TROUT PLANTS BY CDFG: 
Caples Lake, Silver Lake, Kirkwood Lake, Kinney Res, Blue Lakes upper and lower, Carson Rivers east and west, Burnside lake. Markleeville Creek, Silver Creek.
