Fallen Nevada law officers memorialized at ceremony Thursday
The service honored Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer Alyn Beck and Igor Soldo, among the 128 Nevada Peace Officers who have been killed in the line of duty. Police officers from around Nevada made their way to Carson City to pay tribute to the fallen officers.
In 1998, the memorial was dedicated on the Capitol grounds to recognize the ultimate sacrifice these officers made in service of their communities.
The two Las Vegas officers were shot and killed June 8, 2014 during an ambush while dining in a pizza restaurant. Two subjects, a male and a female, approached them at their table and shot them execution style without warning. The subjects, both with anti-government extremist views, then stole both officers' weapons and ammunition and ran to a nearby Walmart, where they shot and killed a civilian.
Responding officers followed the two into the Walmart and exchanged gunfire with them. The male subject was killed by rifle fire from a responding officer and the female then committed suicide.
The Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Run began April 30 from Las Vegas, ending Thursday in Carson City.
The first officer killed in the line of duty was Carson County Nevada Territory Sheriff John L. Blackburn who was killed in 1861 while making an arrest. Since 1861, 128 officers have died in the line of duty.
