Community Group Seeking to Raise Funds for WNC Athletics
Members of a community group that seeks to preserve intercollegiate athletics at Western Nevada College met with President Chet Burton Thursday in Carson City about the proposed initiative.
Both parties agreed conceptually to an agreement that would fund athletics through 2021, if new athletics fundraising goals can be met.
“This is an example of the community coming together to support a common goal of preserving two great athletics programs in an era of scarce resources,” said President Burton.
The community group will also work to provide funding in 2015 to repair/replace the baseball infield and outfield fencing. Members will also be working on securing funding for an on-campus softball field. The repair of the baseball field and building of an on-campus woman's softball facility are also necessary for the long-term success of athletics at the college.
According to Helaine Jesse Morres, president of the Athletics Foundation of Western Nevada, raising funds for athletics through a community group will allow the college foundation to focus on other important initiatives and show the community’s commitment toward preserving these programs.
