UNR police to conduct active assailant exercise Thursday
The University of Nevada, Reno Police Services is planning a full-scale active assailant exercise from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 19.
The exercise will include agencies from across the region to test the Regional Active Assailant Response Protocol as well as the University’s Active Assailant Plan. With numerous community and regional partners participating, this drill will be the largest in the University’s history.
“Active assailant and other critical incidents in our community require multiple agencies, jurisdictions and diverse expertise to manage,” University Police Chief Adam Garcia said. “Our community has learned a lot from the recent events that have taken place. We want to continually improve and collaborate in our preparedness efforts as we would in a large-scale event.”
Tested during the exercise will be the region’s multijurisdictional tactical response, tactical medical response, mass-casualty incident management, University mass notification systems, multijurisdictional resource management, Unified Command, hazardous materials/EOD management, incident stabilization practices, recovery, restoration transition and compliance with federal regulations.
Given the number of agencies participating in the drill, a number of emergency vehicles will be on and around campus. Because of the size of campus, the event will aid regional responders in familiarity with the University and the dynamics of rapid response in an area of campus oriented toward pedestrian traffic and less accessible to vehicular traffic.
Involved are the University Police Services which will host local and regional law enforcement agencies including but not limited to Nevada Highway Patrol, Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department, Truckee Meadows Community College Police Department, Washoe County School District Police Department and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
Other regional first responders will also participate including the Community Emergency Response Team, REMSA, Renown Health and Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center.
