Carson City weather: Motorists should prepare for messy Monday afternoon commute
A storm system will continue to move through the Carson City and Sierra regions Monday, bringing cold air, wind and snow that will likely produce icy conditions to area roads, according to the National Weather Service.
Already this morning north of Carson City, the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to a single vehicle rollover northbound near Bowers Mansion. Snow and winds are expected to kick up again later today, especially around the evening commute time. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. Monday night.
A precipitation band will slowly progress southward through the day bringing widespread chances of snow along with localized limited visibility into the afternoon and evening, according to the weather service. For the valleys, 1 to 4 inches are possible and up to a foot in the Sierra.
Monday's storm in that sense will be similar to last week's storm where icy roads factored into several multi-vehicle pile ups in the afternoon and evening commute. Take it slow in ice and snow and leave plenty of time for your evening commute home. For Reno, Sparks and Virginia City areas, the timing of the heaviest snow would be between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
For Carson City and areas south into the Carson Valley, the weather service says the heaviest snowfall would likely be generated between 1 and 7 p.m.
Plan on difficult travel conditions, especially during the afternoon and evening commute today. Be prepared for reduced visibilities at times. Roads may become icy and hazardous this evening, with long delays possible.
Even light snowfall causes major travel delays, especially during periods of high traffic volume. The weather service advises to allow extra time to reach your destination. Leave extra space between vehicles since it takes longer to stop on slick roadways. The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 511 or go to NVroads.com.
Tuesday morning's commute may also see similar icy road conditions. The weather service says a much larger system will moving into the region beginning Thursday, that could bring several inches of snow to the valleys and "feet" of snow to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra. Check back for updates.
