Carson City wakes up to snow on the ground Sunday, more on the way
The greater Carson City area was greeted with snow on the ground Sunday morning, with more on the way overnight, according to the National Weather Service.
There's a Winter Weather Advisory in effect Sunday from 3 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday, with periods of light snow developing mid-afternoon for lower valleys and foothills, mainly along and north of Carson City to Lovelock line including Reno and Sparks.
Snow may mix with or change to light rain showers in lower valleys overnight. Travel could be difficult due to snow and gusty winds. Plan for double the normal travel time especially after sunset.
When all is said and done, the Sunday weather systems may generate up to 4 or more inches of snow around Carson City.
Meanwhile, there's a 40 percent chance of snow for Monday before 10 a.m., then becoming partly sunny and breezy. Rain showers are possible Tuesday and Wednesday.
A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Expect snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra on Sunday through 4 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Moderate to heavy snow will move back into the Sierra beginning late morning. High winds will bring blizzard conditions with near zero visibility for the higher elevations around Tahoe.
Travel will be very difficult over Sierra passes including Donner I-80 and Echo US-50. Plan double or more the typical travel times. Strong winds could cause low visibilities and power interruptions at times. Snowfall rates of 2 inches per hour likely with near zero visibilities at times. If you must travel, this morning is probably the best or wait until daytime Monday.
