Bear Sighting
Hello,
I feel it is important to share my story in an effort to keep people and bears living peacefully together in the Tahoe area.
My husband and I saw a med-large size black bear here in South Lake Tahoe walking between hotels on Manzanita and La Salle St. just off Park last night 10/5/12 about 10pm. We were on our way walking to the Casinos when my husband spotted the bear, put his arm around me, turned me around slow and said "Kris do not freak out and do not run. There is a big bear over there. We are going to walk real calm and slow back to the room." Once we were a distance away, my husband told me to glance back so I could see the bear. Just as I was turning the corner of the building, I did. My goodness that bear was big and had huge legs. He was walking real calm but did have his head turned toward us. I called 911 to let them know, and they were not worried. Just told me to ignore the bear and keep walking. Wow. He was about a block or less from us. Very startling. It looked like he was probably coming from the garbage bins at Blue Lake Inn and headed to the one here at 3 Peaks Resort. So glad nothing terrible happened, the bear made it safe through town and didn't hurt anyone. I do think there should be a little more warning and education for tourists. It was seriously one of the scariest moments of my life and had my husband not handled it the way he did, I would have just ran on instinct. Which I now know would no have been good. I think it's important for bear and people safety, that everyone know what to do if they encounter a bear to stay safe and keep bears from being hurt as well.
