"Housing First" advocate to speak at Carson Dems' tele-luncheon
Featured speaker at Monday's virtual Democratic luncheon will be Dee Dee Foremaster, executive director of the Rural Center for Independent Living and Do Drop In day refuge for the homeless and mentally ill. The topic of her presentation will be "Housing First: Why the first and primary need of an individual experiencing homelessness is to obtain stable housing, and that all other issues affecting that individual can be addressed once housing is obtained."
Housing First is an innovative alternative to the traditional system of emergency shelters-to-transitional housing progressions. Rather than moving homeless individuals through a progression of housing levels, Housing First moves the homeless individual or household directly from the streets or shelter into their own accommodations. This is in contrast to homeless programs built on a model of "housing readiness" — where an individual was required to address other issues that may have led to the episode of homelessness prior to entering housing.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for noon on Monday, June 22nd, and will be held online via Zoom teleconference due to the temporary shutdown of in-person venues. Those wishing to be on distribution for a link to the teleconference can email Rich Dunn, Men's Committee Events Coordinator, at richdunn@aol.com.
