April 2017 Capital City Reads: Building a Better Community
The Carson City Library would like to invite the entire community to participate in a city-wide reading initiative throughout the month of April with the theme of “Building a Better Community.” The 2017 Capital Reads program will focus around three titles:
— Thank You for Being Late: An Optimist's Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations by Thomas L. Friedman,
— Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design by Charles, and Montgomery
— The New Better Off: Reinventing the American Dream by Courtney E. Martin
The Carson City Library is hosting a ‘Book Tasting’ for Capital Reads on Friday, April 7th from 5:00-6:00PM. The ‘Book Tasting’ is an event for adults aged 21 and older to view and discuss the books for this program at the library.
The participants will have an opportunity to preview books and rate them according to the book’s cover, description, and a brief excerpt. And it is not only the books they will get to ‘taste’! The Carson City Friends of the Library will be providing wine and appetizers for participants.
The ‘Book Tasting’ is expected to fill up quickly! To reserve your spot, visit the Carson City Library Calendar to register today: http://carsoncitylibrary.libcal.com/event/3227060
Thank You For Being Late has been called “a field guide to the 21st century”. Friedman examines some of the changes that have occurred in technology and society, how they affect people’s lives, and ways for us to cope and take advantage of these changes.
Happy City looks at the trend of people moving away from suburbs and into cities, and how people are using urban design to make cities a happier place to live. Award-winning journalist Charles Montgomery interviewed designers, suburbanites, mayors, and activists to find answers to how to improve urban life.
In The New Better Off, Martin looks at how the idea of success in America is being redefined. She examines conventional definitions of the American dream and compares them to how people are actually living and how they are reimagining what makes a good life.
Copies of Thank You For Being Late, Happy City, and The New Better Off will be available at the Carson City Library while supplies last. There are also Book Club in a Bag kits available, each containing 8 copies of one of the books. There will also be a recommended reading list of additional titles available for check-out with a library card. All titles are also available as ebooks and several as e-audiobooks on the library’s OverDrive website (www.carsoncitylibrary.overdrive.com).
The Carson City Library is located at 900 N. Roop St. For more information call 887-2244 or visit the Library’s website at www.CarsonCityLibrary.org.
