No Meningitis Outbreak in Northern Nevada
Submitted by editor on Thu, 10/11/2012 - 12:08pmThere are no known outbreaks of meningitis in Northern Nevada, reports Carson Tahoe Hospital in Carson City.
Doris Dimmitt, hospital epidemiologist, reports that the hospital did not use the contaminated drug identified as causing the outbreak.
Nevada is identified as one of the states receiving the contaminated drugs. The FDA identified and seized five unopened vials of contaminated drug from Southern Nevada, but no infected patients have been identified state wide.

UnitedHealth HEROES is a wellness initiative designed to encourage young people, working with educators and youth leaders, to create and implement walking, running or hiking programs aimed at helping fight childhood obesity.

The Greenhouse Project Hosts Tours, Free Workshop
Submitted by editor on Mon, 10/01/2012 - 9:21amThe Carson City Greenhouse will offer tours of its premises on Saturday, October 6, 2012 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. At 10:30 a.m., Greenhouse manager Ray Saliga will present a workshop on propagating herbs from cuttings. The Greenhouse is located on the Carson High School campus, 1111 North Saliman Road. To reach it, turn into the high school property from Saliman Road at Robinson Street. The public is invited to attend.
Dayton students take flight aboard Care Flight as part of fundraising program
Submitted by editor on Sun, 09/30/2012 - 9:23amThree Dayton High School students landed a birds-eye view of the sky aboard Care Flight on Saturday as part of the "Flight for a Good Cause" fundraising effort.
After a pre-flight briefing the participating students — Isabelle Villafana, Nadia Macias and Cynthia Soto — climbed aboard and soared on a Care Flight air ambulance for a first-hand look at how it functions.
The students, two juniors and a senior are enrolled in Dayton High School’s HOSA; Future Health Professionals class.

Prescription drug roundup offered Saturday

Those pills, ranging from narcotics to heart medicine for a teenager's parent or grandparent, can have a street value and be highly addictive.
Driving force behind United Blood Services retires after 22 years

In between laughter and tears, employees and friends lined up one-by-one to pledge their appreciation and allegiance to Alana, the donor recruitment and community relations supervisor for United Blood Services of Carson City, whom many say was the driving force and life blood behind the operation.

Food For Thought hunger program moves to new Carson City location

Authors to lead Carson City workshop on dementia Sept. 18

Caring for a loved one with dementia is daunting, creating new challenges and situations at every turn. This workshop is designed to give caregivers, family members and loved ones the skills and knowledge needed to cope with the situation, and even find some humor in it. It will also help ease the anxiety and fear that goes along with the care giving.

The presentation will focus on “Structure and Routine: Keys to a Parent’s Sanity.” Establishing a household structure and routine is often anything but routine. Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 08/06/2012 - 9:13amChildren and Family Counseling therapists Kristopher Komarek, MSW and Jeffrey Davis, MSW, LCSW will present a monthly mental wellness series at the Carson City Library beginning Monday, August 13th, at 6:00 p.m. The first program for the Mind-Body Connection: Mental Wellness Series is “Don’t do that! Do what I say! How your child learns behavior. Birth to 12.”
This monthly series will be held on the second Monday of the month and run through October. These recurring presentations will focus on various topics. Active participation and interactive dialogue is encouraged.
