‘Grow Your Own, Nevada!’ classes return to cooperative extension offices

Nevadans can learn to grow safe, fresh, organic produce at home and in school and community gardens without spending a lot of money.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will help show residents how during eight “Grow Your Own, Nevada!” gardening classes featuring “back-to-basics” best practices for producing bountiful harvests. Classes will be presented Mondays, 2:30 – 4:30 p.m., July 8 – Aug. 26, live in Reno and video-conferenced to Extension offices throughout the state, including those in Carson City, Gardnerville, Fallon and Yerington.

Winners announced for Women to Women Nevada June contest

Women to Women Nevada with host Carol Paz offered June viewers a simple contest where the winners would get some really nice prizes.

It being July 1, that means winners for the June contest were picked today. The contest was easy. A number between 1 and 500 was selected prior to the launch of the contest. Entries had to guess what the number was to win.

Benefit car wash Sunday for hospitalized Nevada Department of Corrections officer

A car wash to benefit Nevada Department of Corrections officer Mike Gribble will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, at the AM/PM located on the corner of William and North Carson streets in Carson City.

Gribble had been on life support after undergoing intestinal surgery. He remains hospitalized but friends and family say he is improving. The car wash costs $5 and is being hosted by friends and co-workers of Mike and Christie Gribble.

Carson City Boy Scouts to collect food for FISH on Saturday at Wal-Mart

Boy Scout Troop 341 of Carson City will hold a Food Drive for Friends in Service Helping, otherwise known as FISH, on Saturday, June 29 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wal-Mart locations on Retail Drive and Topsy Lane.

Canned foods and non-perishable items are welcome. Items collected will help feed children and families during the summer.

Cancer Program Achieves First Gold Level Rating in Nevada

CARSON CITY — Carson Tahoe Health announces that the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons granted a three-year renewal of accreditation to the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center. The surveyors awarded seven extra commendations for exceeding industry standards, making CTCC the first cancer center in Nevada to achieve a “gold level” designation.

Senior Mingle at The Lodge set for Thursday

Carson City seniors are invited to celebrate the beginning of summer at a tropical themed Senior Mingle on Thursday, June 20 at The Lodge Assisted Living Community.

Area seniors can “GoGoNuts” while enjoying the party atmosphere in the Lodge’s Ballroom and Dining Hall from 2 to 4pm. Party goers will enjoy music by the Music Man Larry Elliot, tropical food, and fun games. Plus everyone is entered into a raffle for great prizes.

Local Veterans Affairs Office Expands Mental Health Services

The local Veterans Affairs Sierra Nevada Health Care System has hired 12 new mental health professionals to better serve local veterans. The VA says the new clinical positions will allow veterans to schedule appointments before or after work and on weekends.

Column: A Child’s Building Blocks

I can remember when, as a young child, I had small square wooden building blocks with painted letters and numbers on all the sides. They were about an inch and a half square. I could use them to learn to count or learn the ABC’s or make words. I could also stack them up and make buildings or forts. Their use was as unlimited as my imagination.

Carson City pool to reopen for Sunday family swim

The Carson City outdoor pool will be open for families to cool off on Sunday afternoons through summer. The pool had been closed Sundays for several seasons because of budget cuts.

Sunday's will have special rates and special themes to attract the entire family. With the many young families in Carson City, parks and recreation has decided to reopen the pool. Hours will be from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Signups begin for Carson City CrossFit Future Athlete Sport Conditioning Camp

The Carson City CrossFit Future Athlete Sport Conditioning Summer Camp will run June 10 through July 12.

This will be for all youth athletes playing football, soccer, basketball, baseball, track, cross country, tennis, or want to get in to the Sport of Fitness, CrossFit.

The program will encompass strength training, sport conditioning, kettlebells, tire flips, plyometrics, and sprints. This program is designed for the young athlete to not only get stronger but get better conditioning in during the summer months.

Join park rangers at Washoe Lake State Park for a leisurely spring wildflower walk. Discover some of the many beautiful wildflowers in bloom on this two mile, moderate walk starting at the main boat ramp. Jamba Juice to hold May 11 benefit for cancer patient Tiffani Barber

Jamba Juice on Topsy Lane in Carson City will hold a fundraiser for cancer patient Tiffani Barber, Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11. Fifty percent of sales will go to help Tiffani and her cancer treatment.

Earlier this year the Carson City woman was diagnosed with gliobalstoma, the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumor. She found herself at age 24 in the fight for her life.
