Character Counts! launches in Carson City

Partnership Carson City is initiating Character Counts! in our community, beginning with the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and the Park and Recreation after school programs.

Character Counts! is dedicated to strengthening the character of America’s citizens with a consistent set of ethical values. These values, which are not politically, racially, or religiously based, are called the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

Women to Women with Mary Lou Pawley and the Grace Works program

This week’s guest on Women to Women is with Mary Lou Pawley, who introduced the Grace Works program to Carson City. Grace Works is a Christian-based outreach effort that meets weekends in communities across the country.

It is a program designed where volunteers pitch in to help local people and programs. It began two years ago, with its beginnings at the First Presbyterian Church and now includes 14 other local churches and groups who volunteer their time and energy. ALS Ice Bath Challenge, Bullying Prevention Seminar planned for Sept. 27

Jan Lopas, a Martial Arts coach, instructor, parent and student from Carson ATA Martial Arts, announced the school has joined the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

Carson ATA Martial Arts chief instructors, Mr. Goodner and Mr. Stevens, are taking this Ice Bucket Challenge one step further. They intend to take an Ice BATH for 3 minutes in exchange for donations to the ALS Association.

Signups begin for third annual CASI 5K Walk and Fun Run

Time to lace up the jogging shoes and strut with the pooches Saturday, Sept. 20 in Carson City. It's the third annual Carson Animal Services Initiative's 5K9 fun run/walk at Riverview Park on East Fifth Street in Carson City.

The fundraising event is a great way for families to show off their pets while giving them some exercise too. Awards will be given to the 1st place male and female K9 finishers. Every participant receives a free gift.

Check-in time is between 8:15 - 8:45 a.m. with the run beginning at 9 a.m. Pre-registration is encouraged and discounted fees are offered.

Local churches unite for worship event tonight in Carson City

Several local churches will be uniting together tonight to worship and pray for Carson City. The event, called "Engage" begins at 7 p.m. tonight, Friday, August 29, at the Carson City Community Center.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and several local ministries will be on hand to share the work that is being done in our community. This is the third Engage event in Carson City and momentum has continued to grow with each event.

Western Nevada College welcomes students with annual barbecue lunch

New and returning Western Nevada College students were treated to a barbecue lunch Thursday, an annual Carson City event hosted by the Associated Students of Western Nevada College. WNC officials report a significant increase in full-time student enrollment, with more than 4,000 total students registered this semester.

Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day is the largest volunteer restoration event in the Tahoe basin. Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to restore trails, stabilize stream banks and plant native plants. Last year 82 volunteers from various organizations participated to help restore Tahoe Paradise Park in Meyers, CA.

League seeks volunteers to mark storm drains

The League to Save Lake Tahoe is inviting community members to help mark storm drains and prevent pollution from entering Lake Tahoe at two Stewards of Stormwater events in August at the Tahoe Keys.
The first event is on August 18 from 9 – 11 am and the second is on August 27 from 6 – 8 pm. The League will host the events in partnership with the City of South Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association.

Free Outdoor Youth Expo a Huge Success

This past Saturday close to 200 youth and their families came out for one of the largest free youth outdoor expos in the area.
This is the first year that the Wild Sheep Foundation and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation combined their efforts to make one, huge event.

New Principal Tasha Fuson Shows Promise For Carson High School

Carson High has a new principal to call the shots around the school. Tasha Fuson stepped up to take over the biggest position Carson High offers to begin her 20th year in education. Mrs. Fuson has lived in Washoe Valley for the last seven years after growing up in Las Vegas. She chose Carson because she lives close and she (and her family) have been highly involved in the community for the last seven years.

Scout launches food drive this Saturday and again Sept. 6 for FISH

I am Nick Bowler of Troop 16 in Carson City. I am working on a food drive for FISH for my Eagle Scout project. There will be drop off locations at both Carson City Walmart locations on Saturday, August 23.

There will also be a drop off location on Sept. 6 at First Baptist Church on Mountain Street during their annual Block Party. FISH feeds over 300 families per month and their shelves are empty right now. They can use any non-perishable food item but really need protein like beans, tuna, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese or chili.

Senator Square: Welcome new Carson High students, staff and those returning

Welcome back to the first edition of the 2014-2015 Senator Square column: all news about Carson High School. Hope the summer was great for all of our staff and students. Staff returned last week and have been busy preparing for the students to arrive tomorrow.

The bell schedule for Monday will be an all period day, which means students will go to every one of their classes. The A-B Day rotation of classes will start on Tuesday when students will go to their A Day classes and Wednesday to their B Day classes. Classes begin at 7:40 a.m. and conclude at 2:05 p.m. each day.

This Saturday, the Carson City Raiders Booster Club will hold its annual Membership Picnic, and you are invited to attend. The picnic will be at the Dayton State Park off Highway 50 in Dayton.

Parking is $5.00 As signed member you will receive 1 club t-shirt. The CCRBC will provide the main dish, sodas, and bottled water. Please bring a dish to share, and drinks of your choice if you choose to drink something else.

Carson City back to school enrollment, immunizations continue this week

Beat the back to school run and bring your child in to the Carson City Health and Human Services office this week for their immunization.

Today through Aug. 15, immunizations are being held, with back to school walk-in hours from 1 to 4:30 p.m, no appointment necessary. All required school vaccines are available. After this week, Health and Human Services will offer immunizations on Thursdays only.

The agency is located at 900 East Long Street in Carson City. The number is (775) 887-2190.

'Feds Feed Families' food drive at Carson City Third and Curry Street Farmers Market

“Feds Feed Families” a food drive to benefit the hungry in Carson City, will be accepting donations and cleaned produce at the Aug. 9 and again Aug. 16 at the Third and Curry Street Farmer’s Market in Carson City.

Donations will benefit the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, a local food pantry that provides emergency rations for about 425 families each week.

Pam Winebarger, the food bank and volunteer coordinator, said the need in the community is great.

“We are seeing many more families in need, and seniors too, which is sad,” she said.

Four-year-old's food drive effort for Carson City’s hungry culminates Sunday at Ross Gold Park

A very young Northern Nevada boy has set out on a very mature mission on behalf of his community. Four-year-old Garrett Triner says he doesn’t want to see people go hungry and told his mother, Randi Vigna, he wanted to do something about it after he saw a homeless man on the sidewalk.

The boy asked his mom several questions about hunger and food and why people sometimes go without. That’s when the idea came up to do a food drive, which is happening this weekend with a drop off Sunday at Ross Gold Park in Carson City from 2 to 5 p.m.

Donations sought, families invited to Saturday back to school clothing drive

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hosts its sixth annual clothing drive to help families in Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville, and Dayton, Nevada communities get ready for school.

The event is open to the public on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel located at 411 N. Saliman Road, Carson City.

Cause Warrior Ride Passes Through Dayton, Northern Nevada

In early morning fog on Sunday, July 20, 2014, a team of six riders began a 70-day long journey across the U.S. to bring awareness and support to today’s wounded warriors and their families. The 2014 Cause Warrior Ride Team will stop in over 70 cities and towns along the route to historic West Point in New York. They arrived in Dayton, NV on Friday, July 25, departing the following morning.
