Tuesday, Feb. 3: Things to do in Carson City

Beginning swing dance lessons will be held at El Charro Avitas; go check out their brand new dance floor. Country Line dancing is taught at the 11th Frame lounge at Carson Lanes every Tuesday and Wednesday. Jimmy Mallett and Jack Clifton will be at Living the Good Life Nightclub and Bistro channeling all the swank of the rat pack.
Yoga Foundations (or yoga for the non-yogi!)

Senator Square: CHS Choir prepares for Feb. 14 Madrigal Dinner

WNC names 329 students to Fall Dean’s List
Submitted by editor on Sat, 01/31/2015 - 11:14amWestern Nevada College has named 329 students to the Fall 2014 Dean’s List. For consideration to WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.
For the first time, the Dean’s List includes students from WNC’s new Jump Start College, which offers high-achieving juniors and seniors from eight high schools in the region the opportunity to earn up to 48 college credits before graduating.
Sunday Afternoon Tea with the Carson City Historical Society

The "Tea" will feature a new menu by Chef Mauricio Leon of Capital Eats, which is located in the Westside Pour House in Carson City. Chef Mauricio has over 15 years of experience and has a passion for creating delicious foods and unique menus, using locally grown produce when they are available.
Friday, Jan. 30: Things to do in Carson City

The Brewery Arts Center presents Mig O’Hara as the first installment of their new Nevada Songwriters Series. And local band Iron Age will be filmed at their gig tonight in the 11th Frame Lounge at Carson Lanes for a ‘rock-umentary.’ Where ever you end up tonight, you’re bound to have a good time.

Diner Night At Johnny Rockets Shows Huge Turn Out
Submitted by Kyle Kunz on Thu, 01/29/2015 - 11:33amFor a decent five-hour span Wednesday, Carson High School hosted its third night time event of Winterfest week. Pertaining to the day's theme of "Way back Wednesday," the Senators hosted a diner night at Johnny Rockets.
The restaurant showcases a typical 1950's diner that tied in perfectly with the "Way back Wednesday" theme. The school received 10 percent of the total profits from everybody who attended and purchased food.
Thursday, Jan. 29: Things to do in Carson City

Time to hit the grocery store and stock up on chips and dips and chicken wings! If you don’t want to do the cooking yourself, there will be plenty of places around town to load up on grub and cheer on your team.
Sassafras re-opens at Hot Springs Road location
Submitted by editor on Wed, 01/28/2015 - 10:40pmWhile many were looking at South Tahoe Wednesday night and a grand opening of the Hard Rock Casino, there was a Carson City opening noteworthy of its own with Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, re-locating to 1500 Old Hot Springs Road.
As many in Carson City know, the Sassafras in downtown was not only very popular among local foodies, artists and musicians but its following crossed other boundaries, too, from doctors, nurses, deputies and firefighters to old school conservative politicians and progressive lawmakers.
Help needed for Fuzzy the Australian Shepherd

Fuzzy is an Australian Shepherd dog who is about 5 years old. In October he was tied by a leash to the front porch of a rural animal shelter in Yerington, Nevada. He was left with a teddy bear, french fries and a note attached to his leash saying that someone found him but couldn't care for him. The animal shelter took him in and have been caring for him since.
Carson/Storey 4-H Awards Night

The Leader’s Council supports all of our 4-H clubs and holds events to raise funds for our scholarship program. They meet once a month to plan activities and deal with requests from clubs and the community.

Submitted by Danielle Cook on Wed, 01/28/2015 - 12:05amToday, Mayor Bob Crowell will deliver the State of the City Address to the Chamber of Commerce’s Soup’s On luncheon. It is sold out, so for those without tickets, you can catch it online later this week.
If you have some Legos handy, you may want to commemorate the 57th Anniversary of the little brick’s patent while celebrating National Have Fun at Work Day. It’s probably a safer bet than trying to celebrate National Kazoo Day at work.

It’s a Jazz Extravaganza tonight as the Mile High Jazz Band teams up with Carson High School’s Jazz Band at the Community Center.

Vagina Monologues Performances to Raise Money for Advocates to End Domestic Violence

Every year V-Day invites activists in colleges, communities, high schools, or youth groups around the world to present select benefit events during and leading up to V-Season (February 1-April 30). The purpose of these events is to raise awareness about violence against women and girls as well as raise money (100% of the proceeds must be donated) for local beneficiaries that are working to end violence.

Participating in the Spelling Bee were students from Bethlehem Lutheran, Carson Montessori, and St. Teresa. In the 6th grade bee students Nevan McIlwee, Erika Filter and Seydeanna Delgado. 7th grade was Vincent Burgess and Sophia Taggart. 8th grade was Nathan Kechely and Aidan Thomas.

There are some great music options for tonight: the kick-off to the Tahoe Sound Series at the Brewery Arts Center with 4 Piece Puzzle, local favorites, the Whitehats, jammin’ at Westside Pour House, DJ Country Bobby will be at Carson Lanes, and Jimmy Mallett brings the swanky tunes to Bella Fiore.

Carson City area donations help FISH buy shelter shuttle
Submitted by editor on Thu, 01/22/2015 - 11:06amThrough the support of Carson City area donors and organizations, Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, has bought a “new” used shuttle bus to transport residents of its homeless shelter. The 2008 Starcraft vehicle has a lift for wheelchair access and seats 13 passengers.
It replaces the FISH shelter van that had over 240,000 miles, carried only 10 passengers, and had no ability to transport clients using wheelchairs.

Sierra Nevada Forums is presenting ‘Lions and Tracking and Bears, OH MY’ about the incredible animals in our foothills. ‘A Short History of Virginia City’ is to be found at the Nevada State Museum, followed by a book signing by Authors Ron and Susan James.
Youth Theater Carson City holds auditions Saturday

Auditioners should prepare a one minute song and be prepared to learn a dance. Tuition is $100; Scholarships available upon application.

Carson’s own Victory Rollers are looking for fresh meat and are holding a six week class (off roller skates) to show everyone the ropes. They hope to see you tonight at Bordewich Elementary School. Just down the street, the Brewery Arts Center has an Improv workshop starting at 6:30 p.m. If you’ve wanted to attend the First Friday Improv, but have been a little shy, this is a great chance to learn about what goes on and how to jump in the fray. Be warned, you will probably have some fun.

Professional Saleswomen of Nevada Announce their 1st Quarter Charity
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 01/19/2015 - 1:23pmProfessional Saleswomen of Nevada, also known as PSN, announced at their January Luncheon at Reds Old 395, that Project 150 Reno would be their 1st Quarter charity.
All the proceeds raised from monthly raffles will be donated to this wonderful organization. Project 150 started in December 2011 to help homeless High School students In Las Vegas. The effort has now expanded to Reno. "PSN" is looking to help Project 150 reach the Carson City area as well.
