Despite Trailing in Polls, Christensen Claims He Will Win US Senate Primary
With early voting under way for the Nevada primaries, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Chad Christensen yesterday maintained that he will come out on top, despite polls showing him trailing well behind candidates Sue Lowden, Sharron Angle, and Danny Tarkanian..
When appearing on Nevada NewsMakers, Christensen said there’s a long time before the June 8 primary election, and he believes his record will allow him to succeed, despite his campaign’s finances being significantly less than that of the leading candidates.
“It’s not all about money, and it’s a shame that so many in this country feel that it’s all about money, he said. “Typically, it’s the candidate who spends the most [that wins] – I’m trying to get away from that, because I am a conservative Republican, and a Republican primary is all about moving the party faithful.
Christensen also claimed that he is the best-equipped candidate to face Senator Harry Reid in November. He cited his undefeated campaign record in the Assembly, compared with Lowden’s 1996 loss in the state Senate race and Angle’s failed Congressional bid in 2006.
He also mentions that he won his first re-election against Justin Jones, who he described as one of Reid’s “protégés, by 6,000 votes.
“I see [my opponents] both caving in on top of themselves for positions, things they’ve said – and this is our opportunity. Republicans right now are looking for a stable candidate that has a resume, that has a record to stand on, and who can, in the end, in November, defeat Harry Reid and go Washington and to the right thing
When asked, Christensen also said that he believes Mormon voters would choose him over Senator Reid, which he says may also help him in the primary.
“I’m always careful to bring my religion here, but what I can say is the members of my church are looking for a staunch conservative that understands and has read the constitution, and that follows the constitution,” he said. “Being familiar with my work again in the state Legislature, I believe that members of my church will choose me over somebody like Harry Reid, who has clearly walked away from our constitution.”
