Greenhouse Project, Carson Tahoe Health offer 2020 Foothill Garden Education Series starting Friday

The first of a series of 12 educational gardening classes presented through the collaboration of Carson Tahoe Health and The Greenhouse Project begins this Friday, Jan. 24. Site managers Cory King and William Pierz have put together the monthly series of classes.

Carson City Sheriff's Office joins statewide effort to crack down on distracted driving

Distracted driving is a leading cause of crashes and injury to both drivers and pedestrians. The Carson City Sheriff's Office is working together with other Nevada law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for distracted drivers.

Senator Square: Carson’s got game is the theme of 2020 Winterfest

Winterfest is here, and the theme, Carson's Got Game, is more than just a nice motto, it is a series of multiple physical board games, playground games, and video games. According to CHS physical education teacher and Leadership adviser Ann Britt, “the class color teachers will be playing a game of life-size Hungry Hippo during the assembly Jan. 17, and we will be doing a door decorating competition with judging taking place Jan. 21; the top three winners will receive a gift card to Starbucks.”

Carson City Weather: Perfect day for Sledding

The first winter snowstorm of 2020 has passed, and there shouldn’t be any more precipitation coming as the storm continues to move east.

The weather today will have a high of 38 and a low of 24, with partly sunny skies. The winds have also died down, with a breezy 4-5 mph being the top out for the day.

Carson City Schools on 2 hour delay Friday

Due to winter related conditions, all schools in the Carson City School District will begin 2-hours later than their usual start time, Friday, Jan. 17, 2020.

All Pre-K and Early Childhood Carson City school classes, those include morning recreation programs, are canceled. Breakfast will not be served. Principals will adjust the school schedule for the shortened day. Educators and staff should arrive safely and as early as they are able, well before school is to begin on the shortened schedule.

Greenhouse Project dinner fundraiser, comedy, live music and more: Carson City region readies for upcoming weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. The Union will host a dining fundraiser for the Greenhouse Project on Friday, and artist Jakota Wass performs at Bella Vita Bistro. The 43rd annual Wild Sheep Show will be held at the Reno-Sparks Convention. Comedian Marc Yaffee headlines the Carson Comedy Club on Saturday with much more in store for the weekend! Carson City area weather: Storm bring strong winds, snow, slick roads and spinouts

UPDATE 2:30PM: There's an 8-vehicle pileup on Highway 50 West Spooner in the eastbound lane below Golf Club Drive. No injuries were reported. Another spinout related crash was reported near the pileup, also in the eastbound lane. Motorists are advised not to drive up the hill due to slick conditions.

UPDATE 2:15PM: Carson City Sheriff's dispatch reports multiple fender bender accidents around town as well as along Highway 50 West and East. Motorists are urged to slow down due to conditions. Sanders and plows have been dispatched to heavily traveled areas.

A strong system moving into the region Thursday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Warning for Lake Tahoe and Sierra and a Winter Weather Advisory for the Carson City region.

Prescribed fire operations continue around Lake Tahoe Basin

Weather permitting, the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team will continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in the Tahoe Basin.

The first significant winter storm of 2020 will be blowing into the region Thursday afternoon, bringing gusty winds, heavy snow in the Sierra and 1-2 inches of snow possible in the lower valleys. Enjoy the sunny weather and a brief calm Wednesday morning through early evening before gusty winds blow into the region overnight, bringing rain and snow to the valleys and heavy snow to the Sierra by Thursday. 380 students make Western Nevada College fall semester Dean's List

For the second straight Fall semester, more than 370 students at Western Nevada College made the Dean’s List. After 373 students made the Dean’s List last fall, that total was topped by 380 students who qualified for the honor for the recently concluded fall semester.

To earn the distinction of making WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher. Honorees include:

High wind gusts occurred throughout the Carson City and Lake Tahoe region Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning, especially along ridge tops and wind prone locations. The National Weather Service chart above includes selected locations where wind gusts of 50 mph or above were reported.

Carson City Board of Supervisors to hear report on inmate deaths at Carson City Jail

High Wind Warning tonight through Tuesday for Carson City region

A weather system moving into the region will bring strong gusty winds, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a High Wind Warning from 10 p.m. Monday through 1 p.m. Tuesday for the greater Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton areas as well as the Mono County region.

Bobcat spotted resting in Southwest Carson after a lunch of a neighbor's pet duck

According to Carson City resident Bob Bondiett, a bobcat was spotted in a residential neighborhood taking a snooze under a cherry tree after the wild cat made itself a lunch out of a neighbor's pet duck.

First and foremost, our condolences go out to the duck's family.

Famed country rock band at Silver City, early Carson City history, live comedy and more this weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Nevada Artists Association New Year’s Show, and there’s a historical Curry family presentation at the Nevada State Museum. Famed country rock band I See Hawks in L.A. perform at the Historic Silver City Schoolhouse on Saturday. Carson City area weather: Light snow expected Thursday morning prompts advisory

UPDATE Thursday: A band of heavier snow showers will move across western Nevada this afternoon. Areas from Reno to Fernley to Fallon and south to Carson City, Virginia City, and Yerington have the best chances of seeing a quick light accumulation. This includes Interstate 80 east of Reno, Highway 580 in Washoe Valley, and Highway 50 east of Carson City to Fallon. Accumulations will range from a dusting up to a quick half inch in these areas. We can't rule out spots of near one inch snowfall mainly on non-paved surfaces.

Periods of light snow may coincide with Thursday morning's motorist commute, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for the Carson City region and Lake Tahoe.

Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space to host Full Moon Hike this Friday night

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will host January's Full Moon Hike on the Wild Horse Trail this Friday, Jan. 10. Not only will the hike feature some wild horses and the "Wolf Moon" it will also be a celebration of Carson City's first Winter Trails Day.
