Heading into Monday and moving forward to the first full week of 2020 we're looking at mostly sunny skies and a daytime high near 50. Activities lined include the Winter Reading Challenge at the Carson City Library, organizers of the Pete Buttigieg presidential campaign will give a presentation, art activities, plus a free yoga class at the Community Center and more. As we get a start on 2020, many have made it a New Year's resolution to read more books. Carson City Library has made it easier for those hoping to get a solid footing on their pledges and is offering prizes to boot as part of its 2020 Winter Reading Challenge.

Not only did the nonprofit organization Fellowship of Christian Athletes open their Christmas tree lot Nov. 24 to raise funds for their organization’s events and outreaches, they also supported other organizations and individuals by giving away 350 Angel Tree Christmas stockings and Christmas trees to Carson City children and families in need, and they also partnered with Sierra Lutheran High School to donate 75 trees to the US Marines at the Warfare Training Center in Coleville, Calif.

Heading into the first weekend of 2020, there are several activities around the Carson City region lined over the next three days. Events include the Winter Round Up Run at Centennial Park, the Carson City Library 2020 Winter Reading Challenge, plus you can take a post-New Year's stroll while the weather is nice during Saturday's Downtown Carson City Wine Walk. The Nevada Army Guard's 757th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion will mobilize beginning Friday for an approximately 1-year mission to Poland in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve.

CARSON CITY — Did you know that wood-burning stoves are a significant source of harmful air pollution? The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, working with the University of Nevada, Reno’s Business Environmental Program, are excited to offer instant rebates to Carson City and Douglas County residents who replace their old wood-burning stoves through Nevada’s wintertime clean-heating rebate program.

Avoid Injury and Improve Your Performance! Our camps focus on improving Pillar strength and stability. The pillar refers to the shoulders, torso, and hips and their interaction during leg and arm movement. A healthy and functional pillar will increase performance and decrease risk of injury in the athlete and lay-person alike.

Ring in the New Year with a great read and be entered to win prizes at the same time. While reading is usually its own reward, patrons who take part in the Carson City Library's Winter Reading Challenge will also be earning raffle tickets as they lose themselves in a good book or peruse the daily paper.

CARSON CITY — Juraj “George” Sojka of Stateline, Nev., has joined the Nevada Division of Tourism, also known as Travel Nevada, as its new international market manager. Sojka will oversee Travel Nevada’s efforts in Europe and the United Kingdom. He brings about 10 years of sales, marketing and management experience to the position.

RENO — January is National Radon Action Month, and University of Nevada, Reno Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans from Jan. 1 through Feb. 29. Radon test kits are available at Extension offices and partnering locations, as well as at free presentations, statewide.

A fast moving, weak storm will bring the potential for light snow to the Sierra, northeast California, and western Nevada late Sunday afternoon into Monday morning. While significant accumulation is not expected, travel impacts are probable, with the worst conditions likely Sunday night into Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Hello fellow anglers! We are just a few days away from the Topaz opener on January 1, 2020 after its closure three months ago to this date.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife has planted 51,000 pounds of trout, which is approximately 17,800 individual trout.

As a note, the NDOW planted Eagle Lake, Triploid and the Tahoe strain as well. I would have to say, if you don't catch a fish on opening day. It might be time to look for a new sport. With all the trout in the lake with the additional poundage that has been added, fishing should be pretty good.

The year is nearly over and winter is upon us; avoid an early onset of cabin fever, and stretch your legs by coming out to the Wungnema House for the last open house of 2019 on Sunday, Dec. 29 and learn about some of unique and enduring contributions a family of Native Americans made to our area. Access to the Wungnema House is off Saliman Road, opposite Carson High School.

Heading into the weekend, post-Christmas holiday activities continue around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Christmas Through the Years presentation at the Carson Valley Community Theater, Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop, musicians Lauren Kepler and Dan Cypher at Bella Vita Bistro, laughs at the Carson Comedy Club and much more!

We celebrate our community for its many, many charitable functions and its generosity in the spirit of Christmas and giving. The Carson Nugget and Food For Thought, a Carson city nonprofit that is dedicated to feeding children in need, teamed up this fall and launched a winter coat drive that culminated Monday where dozens of children were able to pick their new jackets and parkas and enjoy a holiday brunch among friends and family.

Heading into Christmas Eve, activities around the capital city are winding down, but the last minute shopping will continue, so prepare for that rush on the roadways and at local stores. It is the last day of the Holiday Craft Show at Carson Mall, so stop on by. There are no planned Muscle Powered fitness events scheduled. Christmas Eve church services are at First Presbyterian Church in Carson City and other places of worship around town. Here's what's ahead Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2019.

Heading into Monday, it sure does feel like Christmas around the capital City. With only two shopping days left until Christmas be sure stop by the Carson Mall for the final days of its Holiday Craft Show. Weather wise we're looking at some valley snow showers into the afternoon and evening. Activities include a spirited discussion by local historian CW Bayer about the origins of Reno's tawdry reputation, plus Carson Cigar Company will hold its annual Ugly Sweater Christmas Party. Gusty conditions will continue Sunday around the Carson City area with snow expected in the Sierra that may make it down to the valley floors on Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

For the first time, the Brewery Arts Center has organized Carson City’s "Unsilent Night." An original composition by Phil Kline, "Unsilent Night" was written specifically to be heard outdoors in the month of December. It takes the form of a street promenade in which the audience becomes the performer.

On Monday, Dec. 23, more than 130 Carson City children in transition will receive a brand new coat, a gift and a holiday brunch, thanks to the efforts of Food for Thought, a Carson City-based non-profit dedicated to feeding children, and the generosity of the Carson City Nugget Casino Hotel.

With the holiday travel period beginning this weekend, the National Weather Service says warm weather will last through Friday with a storm expected to bring gusty winds Saturday with snowfall in the Sierra by Sunday.

The spirit of Christmas is in the air as we head into the final stretch of the work week. Thursday events around the capital city feature an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, a Carson City tradition with the return of Joyful Noise Holiday Community Show at the Brewery Arts Center and more.

Clouds will roll into the capital city region Tuesday keeping temperatures quite chilly. Happenings around town include organized morning and evening fitness walks, a "Stuff the Bus Toy Drive" at Capital Ford, a Planning Commission meeting on the proposed Andersen Ranch development and a Posada event at Mark Twain Elementary. Plus, the Carson City School Orchestra Program will hold its annual Holiday Concert at the community center, The Peanuts Gang Trio will hold a free holiday concert at Sassafras, and more.
