Sgt. Daniel Leverne Ackerman was from Carson City, Nev. He served in Vietnam, where he made the ultimate sacrifice in combat service to the United States of America a few weeks after his 21st birthday.

Sgt. Ackerman was born on March 13, 1947, and was killed in action on April 10, 1968. On the Vietnam Memorial Wall his name is located at Panel 49E, Line 7. Sgt. Ackerman was buried at Empire Cemetery, which is just east of Carson City.

Nevada governor officially recognizes WNC war exhibit ‘Always Lost’ with Veterans Day proclamation

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval officially honored “Always Lost: A Meditation on War,” Tuesday in a Veterans Day proclamation. The humanities exhibit, touring nationally, was created by Western Nevada College faculty and students in Carson City.

The proclamation notes 2014 is the “Year of the Veteran” in Nevada as it entered the Union during the Civil War and henceforth is called “Battle Born.”

Well-traveled World War II veteran ready for parade appearance

A well-traveled, 72-year-old World War II veteran is set to make a triumphant return Tuesday at the annual Veterans Day parade in Reno. A remodeled 1942 Dodge WC-54 3/4-Ton Army Ambulance, owned by the Department of Veterans Affairs and refurbished by the Nevada Army Guard, is set to make its first public appearance in years at the parade that begins at 11 a.m. on Virginia Street.

Governor unveils Nevada Fallen Heroes book on eve of Veterans Day

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval unveiled a living memorial Monday honoring Nevada's military men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Nevada Fallen Heroes book will be displayed in the front entrance of the Nevada State Capitol building and contains the names of every Nevadan killed in action dating back to the Civil War.

"The Nevada Fallen Heroes Book will be a living memorial. Each of these names tells a different story. Each name represent dreams deterred," said the governor in his Twitter feed. "As we reflect on the names within this book, we must endeavor to uphold the ideals for which they gave their last full measure of devotion."

Western Nevada College vets march with 'Always Lost' banner

Western Nevada College student veterans Aaron Endel (Active Army, Operation Iraqi Freedom) and Blaine Inman (Active Army, Operation Enduring Freedom) carry a banner for the nationally touring arts and humanities exhibition "Always Lost: A Meditation on War" which features the faces and names of U.S. military war dead in Iraq and Afghanistan since Sept. 11, 2001. Senator Square: Carson High senior Caden Lehman wins national rodeo event

Caden Lehman, a senior at Carson High School, an officer for the Capitol FFA program, and an officer in the Douglas-Carson High School Rodeo Club, recently had his biggest win doing what he loves. He is involved in Team Roping and Calf Roping and is a member of the American Cowboys Team Roping Association. 

Recently at the ACTRA National Finals in Reno at the Livestock Events Center, Caden won the Super 7 National Championship, landing him and his partner, Jack Curry of Gardnerville, each new Royal T 3-horse trailers, buckles, and $10,000 cash. 

Original Emancipation Proclamation on display Nevada Day weekend

The Emancipation Proclamation, the historical document freeing slaves in eleven Confederate states in 1863, will be available for limited viewing at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, Thursday, Oct. 30 through Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014.

This award has been a couple of years in the making for Ned. This team has been on the brink of making the playoffs for the past couple of seasons and this time they were able to break through for the first time in 29 seasons.

Tahoe Mountain Milers partner with Carson City Guide Dog Club for Nevada Day Classic

An annual event since 1989, The Nevada Day Classic — presented by the Tahoe Mountain Milers — is an 8K run, a 2-mile run/walk through the historic west side of Carson City. The races precede the Nevada Day Parade celebrating Nevada's entry into the Union.

This year, for the race's 25th anniversary and the Nevada’s 150th, the Classic will be organized in partnership with the Carson City Guide Dog Club and all net proceeds will go to Guide Dogs For The Blind.

Carson City supervisors recognize 'Always Lost' exhibition on costs of war

Carson City government officials on Thursday recognized Western Nevada College’s nationally known humanities exhibition on the costs of war, “Always Lost: A Meditation on War,” Thursday with a proclamation of appreciation and honor.

Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell, a Vietnam veteran, has called the exhibit “our community’s gift to the nation.”

A proclamation honoring the creators and contributors of “Always Lost” was presented to Western Nevada College President Chester Burton and Professors Emeritus Don Carlson and Marilee Swirczek during the Board of Supervisors meeting.

Tickets go on sale for Nevada Day Governor's Banquet

Tickets are on sale for the 4th annual Nevada Day Governor's Banquet, Oct. 28 at the Grand Sierra Resort. The event will feature Gov. Brian Sandoval, senators Harry Reid and Dean Heller, Congressman Mark Amodei and Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki. The event benefits The Boys & Girls Club of Nevada.

Tickets are $60 per person, or a reserved table for 10 is just $500. Doors open at 6 p.m. The evening also includes table service dinner, silent and live auctions, and a Nevada 150 birthday cake and cake cutting ceremony.

South Lake Tahoe air show officials monitor King Fire developments; blaze prompts free admission to Saturday event

Smoke from the King Fire that originated in Pollock Pines has entered the Lake Tahoe Basin and is affecting visibility and air quality. City officials are closely monitoring the King Fire along with wind patterns from NOAA, visibility with the FAA and local and State law enforcement.

What Works: Unstructured time and how it boosts productivity

It’s Monday, again. And every Monday we do what we do to prepare for the week. For many of us, that includes reviewing our calendars for appointments, meetings, events, and a variety of commitments.

But, have you ever stopped yourself and asked, “Am I over-structuring myself?” I attend the Center for Spiritual Living here in Carson City and this month we are reading a book that addresses over-structuring and other self-inflicted scenarios that limit us in life. It’s called “Real Moments” by Barbara De Angelis. It’s not a new book, but one I really think I’m going to love digging into.

Celebrating 118 years, Carson City Leisure Hour Club hosts Basque specialist

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club begins its 118th year with a presentation by Iker Saitua, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Nevada, Reno. Born in Algorta, Basque Country, Iker will discuss Basque history in a presentation titled Becoming Basque-American: Basque Sheep Breeders and their Ethnic Legitimacy in Nevada (1890-1959).

The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously operating social organization. Its goal is promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature.

Carsonnow.org published a story a few days ago about 4 felony arrests for a shooting on N Edmonds Drive in Carson City. Now I am hearing stories from residents of Woodside Drive just behind N Edmonds of reataliation for the arrests. They claim they are going after Rats on N Edmonds.
When is this going to stop people? You are turning Carson City into a war zone. People are going to get hurt or killed.

Always Lost: A Meditation on War’ Exhibition at Historic Minden Inn Through Sept. 12

A Western Nevada College student veteran crouches down on her knees to search for those she served with. The mother of a fallen soldier stares at the face of her son. The Wall of the Dead quietly tells the story of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, and the thousands who have died.

“Always Lost, A Meditation on War,” the nationally touring humanities exhibition created by WNC students and faculty, opened Monday at the historic Minden Inn, 1594 Esmeralda Ave., and remains through Friday, Sept. 12.

Plea change now forces trial in robbery of elderly World War II vet

One of two involved in the robbery of a 101-year-old Carson City World War II veteran will go before a jury while the other will be sentenced for the crime late next month.

A new 'Carson City' will sail for the U.S. Navy

A few months ago, Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell was out of the state when he received a message from his city hall office that a secretary from the Navy wanted to arrange a meeting with him.

Crowell, a Navy veteran who served in the Vietnam War, suspected the meeting might be about recruiting. He was delightfully wrong.
