Senator Square: Rivalry between Carson and Douglas spreads to school staffs

The staff of Carson High School and Douglas High School have agreed to a rivalry basketball game to be played Nov. 19 at DHS. The staff basketball game is a fundraiser for the Peace Officer’s Memorial Fund.
Multiple members of each of the school’s staff will be on hand to battle it out on the basketball court and continue the rivalry, but for a good cause. Come support the Senators or the Tigers and be sure to wear your favorite school’s colors.

Where to start? This weekend is chock-full of options. The local 4-H club is hosting their annual Fabric and Rummage Sale at Fuji Park. The Annual Feast of Chocolate, hosted by AAUW, is Saturday afternoon at the Plaza Event Center. The Vagina Monologues and One Billion Rising are both raising awareness this V-Day weekend for women’s issues.

Sixteenth annual Feast of Chocolate fundraiser set for Valentine's Day

The 16th Annual Feast of Chocolate at the Carson City Plaza Hotel and Event Center will be held, appropriately Valentine's Day, Saturday, Feb. 14 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for $15 at the front desk of the Plaza Hotel or $18 at the door. The event is hosted by the American Association of University Women, which empowers women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. Money raised will go to scholarships.

Historical Society Tea

The Carson City Historical Society is presenting a "Sunday Afternoon Tea" on February 8 from 1 to 3 p.m at the Foreman-Roberts House, 1207 N. Carson Street. Chef Mauricio will have an all new menu. The tea is a fund raiser for the completion of the interior of the carriage house located behind the Foreman-Roberts House. Reservations can be made by calling D.D. Spencer at (775)741-7897 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $30. Celebrate Valentine's Day, treat a relative or friend or yourself!

Senator Square: Holiday concerts ahead as Carson High choir students earn recognition

The Instrumental Music Department, Bands and Orchestra, is having its annual Winter Holiday Concert on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Donations are welcome. Meanwhile, Carson High School has had a number of their singing Senators recognized for their vocal talents already this year.

Carson City Planned Parenthood Open House

Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts at Comma Coffee

Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts features the 18-member Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Sheryl Adams, presenting jazzy versions of favorite love songs for Valentine's Day, and other swinging, big-band selections.

Highlights of the evening include guest soloist Gerry Wright, soprano sax, playing "When I Fall in Love" and "My Funny Valentine," and guest vocalist Michael Coleman singing "What a Wonderful World" and "Beyond the Sea."

General admission is $5 at the door; free for age 18 and under.

Dance instruction, 6 to 7:15 p.m., is $5 additional.

Movie Review: 'New Year's Eve' enjoyable despite lack of plot

Sometimes watching a dreck movie and enjoying it can be embarrassing. Such is the case with "New Year's Eve," a multifaceted comedy of sorts playing at the Fandango Galaxy cinema in Carson City. The cast is all-star, from Hilary Swank to Robert De Niro. And while the film is pure twaddle, director Gary Marshall keeps all the balls in the air. And he should be able to; he made the same movie last year on a Valentine's Day theme.

For more than a year, the lack of firm details about the Nugget Project has been a major source of frustration to those trying to get their heads around this undertaking.

Without real numbers or plans, those arguing for or against struggled with hitting the moving target that is this project.

But that target just got a whole lot more stationary, as Carson City Manager Larry Werner released a 100+ page feasibility report (attached below) for the Board of Supervisors to use this week when a decision is made on whether to move forward with the project.

State workers to speak out against program elimination, layoffs and prison closure 

There will be some tough love in Carson City today among state employees who will take a firm stand against Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval's proposed budget that takes aim at public services.

Members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 4041 employees and its retiree chapter will address their concerns to the public and press at noon on this Valentine's Day in front of the Legislative Building, 401 South Carson Street in Carson City.
