Chukar season starts Sunday
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sat, 10/13/2012 - 2:08pmWhen you talk to chukar hunters in Nevada you hear about how challenging the hunt actually is. You climb up steep mountains with rough terrain trying to catch a bird that is fast and clever and seems to take great joy in taunting you. It makes you wonder why they do it.
“There are so many reasons why chukar hunting is so popular in Nevada,” said Chris Vasey, Western Region outdoor educator at the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW). “It really is the thrill of the chase. I can honestly say there are very few things as rewarding as getting your limit in chukar.”

Memories of the Nevada 10-In-10 challenge
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 08/16/2012 - 2:24pmThe newspaper headline on page one on Aug. 15, 2002 said it all:
“They made it!”
Yes, they did! And, they did it in record-setting style.
Four athletes, who are personal friends of Elaine and I, completed 10 very physically and mentally-demanding challenges in a period of 10 grueling days, way back in 2002.
I know because we were there for each and every one of those 10 memorable days that resulted in the very first Nevada 10-in-10 Challenge going into the Nevada record book.
Those four were Karl Horeis, Jeremy Evans, Rick Gunn and K. M. Cannon.

Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fish are active and conditions are perfect.
The surface temps are averaging 59 degrees, and climbing to 61.5 degrees by midday. Clarity is very good, to 13.5 ft. Still cool enough on the surface to still be holding some nice Kings on the west side. 2 salmon were caught trolling Almanor West up to 2 lbs.
Trolling has been more effective than bait fishing deep holes and should remain that way until surface temps really spike. Like above 65 degrees.

Hobart Reservoir to open May 1 for 2012 fishing season

Because of its high elevation and location, this reservoir is normally covered with ice, and surrounded by deep snow drifts, when it opens on May 1.
However, this year is entirely different, ice and snow-wise. It will remain open to fishing through September 30.
