Kingsbury Grade closed for construction, Lake Tahoe travelers rerouted to Highway 50 over Spooner
Beginning today, May 1, travelers and commuters looking to get to South Shore Lake Tahoe will need to take Highway 50 over Spooner Summit instead of State Route 207 over Kingsbury Grade.
The road is closed now through May 23 as part of a $15 million road paving and reconstruction project directed by the Nevada Department of Transportation.
“By closing Kingsbury Grade to through traffic during this short three-week period, our crews will be able to follow the aggressive schedule we have developed and complete the project in an accelerated 12 to 18 months,” Pedro Rodriguez, NDOT project manager, said.
Traffic traveling from the Carson Valley to Lake Tahoe and Lake Tahoe to Carson Valley that would normally use Kingsbury Grade will need to use the Highway 50 detour. Residents and businesses will be able to access their homes and places of business by detouring via Highway 50. Both emergency and public transportation vehicles, including hotel (both valley and lake side) shuttles, will always have access and will not be required to use a detour.
Construction will resume during the summer months beginning Tuesday, May 27 through Friday, Aug. 29, with Kingsbury Grade open to through traffic, but nighttime construction-related lane closures and delays to be expected, according to NDOT. The road will be open with one lane in each direction during daytime hours, weekends and all holidays through these summer months.
The project will reconstruct pavement and make drainage, safety, curb and gutter, sidewalk, lighting and other improvements on areas of Kingsbury Grade from just east of Daggett Summit at Tramway Drive to the intersection of Highway 50 at Stateline. Construction will follow a very aggressive schedule to complete the project in an accelerated 12 to 18 months, according to NDOT.
The public can sign up for construction alerts and see additional project information at kingsburyproject.com.
A hotline for the Kingsbury Grade Pavement Reconstruction Project has been set up at 1-844-888-ROAD and messages will be returned within 24 hours.
