Carson City educator Dave Cook to run for Assembly seat

The fourth generation Nevadan and Democrat is running largely on an education plank, saying the state faces important challenges to improve all students' learning experience and ultimately increase the statewide high school graduation rates.

Abowd is a graduate of Bishop Manogue High School and Colorado State University, where she earned a degree in Marketing and Merchandising. Her business degree led her to work as a merchandising manager for a major retailor and then later in marketing with her brother in his financial planning business. But it was the Teacher’s Education program at Sierra Nevada College where Racquel found her calling to teach.
Carson City student Kathryn Cowperthwaite named to University of Vermont dean's list
Submitted by editor on Mon, 02/03/2014 - 5:17pmKathryn Cowperthwaite has been named to the Fall 2013 semester dean's list at the University of Vermont. Cowperthwaite, from Carson City, is a senior English major in the College of Arts and Sciences.
To be named to the dean's list, students must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better and rank in the top 20 percent of their class in their respective college or school.
Carson City Library hosts gifted and talented middle school students

The half-day enrichment was designed to sharpen student’s critical thinking skills through activities that teach students to “see” the community with data.
WNC Baseball To Give A WNC Student $1,000 In Tuition During Fundraiser/Giveaway Raffle In February

The team will be selling raffle tickets for just $1.00 each or 25 tickets for $20.00. At the end of the month, they will draw one winner who will get $1,000 towards their own tuition costs.

Earlier, Lanza shot and killed his mother before driving to the school on his deadly mission. His death at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head ended the brutal killing spree. In the days following the horrific event, calls for sane gun control from a variety of sectors of our society were heard across the country.

As a result, they could miss out on up to $6,143 extra in their federal income tax refunds through the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC. In 2011, on average, the credit boosted refunds for eligible workers in Nevada by $2,200.
WNC offers piano lab use to youth
Submitted by editor on Mon, 01/13/2014 - 8:06pmWestern Nevada College Carson City is offering youth piano classes in its high-tech, digital piano laboratory this spring semester. Youth can now enroll for classes in the same Clavinova lab that is a favorite with college students.
Professional pianist Sue Kinney teaches the classes on Friday afternoons. Beginning classes for Kindergarteners and first graders are offered from 4:30-5:20, p.m., second and third graders meet from 5:30-6:20 p.m., and fourth to sixth graders meet from 3:30-4:20 p.m.

December's Empty Bowls Project in Carson City raises more than $2,700 for FISH

Traditional Chinese dance, music and storytelling at Brewery Arts Center

Xian Na Carlson began learning folk dances as a child growing up in Zhangzhou, China. From her aunt she learned the Tuan Shan, (fan dance), the Xin Jiang regional dance and Tai Ji forms.
Uniform Crime Reporting: Carson City has lowest crime rate since 1994

The data, known as Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR), is collected under precise standards and reported by agencies across the United States. In return, the information is shared in publications such as Crime and Justice in Nevada, published in the summer months by the Nevada Department of Public Safety. Caution should remain when comparing data from one community to another, as numerous variations must be considered which could alter assumptions.
Daniel Gonzales enters race for Carson City Sheriff

Gonzales says he is running for sheriff with the goal of increasing integrity, transparency and accountability in the Sheriff’s Office, as well as restructuring the department to put more officers on patrol and use monies to better protect and serve Carson City and its residents.
Former Carson High School principal Glen Adair dies

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014 in Pittsfield, Mass. Memorial donations may be made to the Carson High School Scholarship Fund, 1111 N. Saliman Road, Carson City, NV 89701.
Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes said Adair was a driven, high energy person who strived to make Carson High School the best it could be.

Jesch has taught violin and viola and performed professionally for more than 30 years. She began playing in the Carson City Symphony when she moved to Nevada in 2004 and is currently Concertmaster and Education Director.
