WNC offers piano lab use to youth
Western Nevada College Carson City is offering youth piano classes in its high-tech, digital piano laboratory this spring semester. Youth can now enroll for classes in the same Clavinova lab that is a favorite with college students.
Professional pianist Sue Kinney teaches the classes on Friday afternoons. Beginning classes for Kindergarteners and first graders are offered from 4:30-5:20, p.m., second and third graders meet from 5:30-6:20 p.m., and fourth to sixth graders meet from 3:30-4:20 p.m.
Cost is $130 for the semester, which runs from January 24 through May 9. Students also need to buy a $6.95 lesson book, available from the WNC Performing Arts Office.
The benefits of studying piano have been well documented in multiple studies. Research shows that not only do students develop better pitch discrimination, they also improve singing and performance in orchestral instruments. Piano study can also enhance areas of brain function that increase performance scores in math and sciences.
Registration is limited to 13 students per class. Register online at the WNC Community Education Non-credit class here or call 445-4249 for more information.
