The valley is alive with the sound of music: the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival, to be specific. Just about everywhere you go, you’ll be treated to something to soothe the soul or get the toes tapping. Get the kids up early for the Young Eagle Flights at the Carson City Airport – they’re free, but you need to be on time for registration. Keep reading and you’ll find a number of ways to enjoy this sunny summer weekend.

Silver City residents are invited to a potluck dinner with the current guests at the Resident Artist Program in Silver City on Saturday, July 1.

The Brewery Arts Center will continues an unforgettable season of free concerts under the stars in Carson City! this Saturday. Having started out strong last week with Big Bad VooDoo Daddy, the great music continues with The Novelists and Athena McIntyre.

How much fun can you pack into a weekend? That isn’t purely a rhetorical question – it’s more of a challenge. Grab the kids for a day at the Dangberg Home Historical Ranch where storytellers are the featured guests. Locals are in the spotlight at the Rockabilly Riot, the Iron Rebels Car Show is for resident cars only. The bells are ringing at the First United Methodist Church. Handbell Ensemble group, Tintabulations, presents a free concert at 7 p.m.

SUNDAY:

Let the good times roll, Carson City. Cars, chrome, choppers, and kruzers are in abundance. Run Whatcha Brung at Fuji Park is open to any and all cars that can get themselves there. The Rockabilly Riot and T Bucket Alliance at Mills Park is an American Graffiti flashback. Cheer on our local motorcycle cops at the Extreme Motor Challenge, or hop on your own bike and go on a poker run with the Lords of Iron Motorcycle Club.

The featured tellers at this year’s event are Willy Claflin, world music percussion band The Batamba Collective, Mother Lode Storytelling Guild tellers Linda Kennedy and Joan McCammon, and chautauquan Larry Lippmann as “Hank Monk”. The weekend also features early afternoon shows specifically for families and children, an open mic storytelling concert and a storytelling group Carson Valley Memories led by Nancy Raven.

Three of the premier Celtic harpers in the world take you on a dramatic musical journey deep into the myths, magic and fabled history of this most captivating instrument to close out this season’s Celtic Series at the Brewery Arts Center, this Saturday May 13, 7 p.m. in the BAC’s MHJ Black Box Theater at 411 West King Street.

The Reno Rodeo 100, a multimedia project collecting stories leading up to the 100-year anniversary of the Reno Rodeo, is debuting the first storytelling event this Saturday, May 13 at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City. Tickets are available for the event, which includes short documentary films, audio stories with slides and live storytellers.

Summer? Winter? Flip a coin. I could’ve guessed the rain was coming, my lilacs just started to bloom. Carson High School Performing Arts is proud to announce our upcoming production of "Godspell," the iconic and inspiring Broadway musical by three time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz, this Thursday through Saturday, April 13-15 at the Carson City Community Center.

On Wednesday, April 19, the excitement of storytelling will be evident when local author William ‘Bill' Hill shares his craft and stories with members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club.

William Hill is a naturalized northern Nevadan, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana and a product of many places and stories. Bill has lived in numerous locales, including Prairie Village, KS, Bristol, TN, Dallas and Denton, TX, and in south and north Lake Tahoe, NV. Currently he creates from the foothills of the eastern Sierra.

CARSON CITY, Nevada – Reno artist Jen Graham has put her own twist on a family tradition. While attending college at the University of Nevada, Reno, Graham worked exclusively in photography, but after earning her bachelor’s degree in art, she expanded her repertoire thanks to a little inspiration from her mother, an avid seamstress and quilter.

The first speech and debate tournament of the year is always an exciting and nerve-wrecking time. We started out the school year with some amazing recruitment efforts on the part of the few returning underclassmen we had recommit to compete this year.

With our school’s annual overnight trip to Rock Creek and the first weeks of school, few competitors felt confident enough with the practice time put in to be able to successfully compete at the first tournament but we did have a small team of three ready and anxious to present to pieces for judgement.

Start the day making something beautiful. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob descends upon our new downtown for some clean-up and coffee. Planes, trains, and bicycles are the theme of this Fathers’ Day weekend. Epic Rides has taken over downtown with booths, bikes, beer, music, and more. The Carson City Airport is hosting their annual Fly-in and Open house, complete with hot air balloon rides. World War II aviation buffs won’t want to miss the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport. Steampunk meets Steam trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum. It's Friday, Carson City. Epic Rides descends on our valley, and I must say, it is one epic event. Beware that quite a few of our downtown streets will be closed and there will be bikes everywhere. Live music can be found at a stage on Musser Street, the Brewery Arts Center, and most all of our casinos. A huge welcome goes out to those in town for the Annual Pow Wow at Stewart Indian School. Don't forget that Fathers' Day is Sunday: plenty of our local shops have something just perfect for the man in your life.

Want to learn something new? The Gold Hill Hotel, the Dayton Historical Society, and the Douglas County Historical Society are all offering a glimpse into the past. The American Sign Language Club at Western Nevada College invites you to an evening of storytelling, poetry, music, and fun at their ‘Open Hands Night.’ Empire Ranch is starting up its 9 and Dine events tomorrow, the only catch is that you’ve got to register by noon today. You’ll find dinner music at Glen Eagles, Sassafras, and Living the Good Life.

Mom, long stemmed roses and the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. The annual Mother’s Day weekend rides on the V&T Railroad are set for Saturday and Sunday, May 7-8. The first excursion of the season is also one of the most popular as families spend the day together celebrating mom.

Everyone is on a metaphorical road to another destination every single moment of every single day from sunup to sunup again, and what is done along the way leaves a lasting imprint on both the doer and the receiver.

Like Karsen Law, an unexpected winner in the SkillsUSA photo competition, the students of Carson High School are continuously coming up with the unexpected and creating memorable opportunities for not only students to participate but the Carson City community as well.

Participants in this week’s Business Alliance Network presentation will learn the basics of effective storytelling, the elements of a good website and how the Carson City Library can help put those principles into action.
