It's beginning to look a lot like Easter: Carson City's events and happenings for Sat. April 13

Good morning Carson City, and happy Saturday! Today is a day that will definitely feel like Spring, with temperatures almost to 70 degrees. The low tonight will be 36, reminding us that we haven’t shirked off the cold weather entirely just yet.

On the docket today we’ve got the Wine Walk at the Carson Mall, a Downtown Easter Egg Hunt, an Anniversary Party at Browser’s Bookstore, easter bunny photos, and more!

Here's what we've got going on Saturday:

— Wine Walk at the Carson Mall Come sip and shop at the Carson Mall! 2nd Saturday of the Month! New walkers pay $10 and returning walkers pay $5. You will receive a wine glass which is yours to keep! Our store will have wine for you to taste while you browse the mall. We will also have a vendor show inside the mall along with a poker walk.

— Browsers Corner Bookshop to host anniversary party, Carson City Chamber social This Saturday the book store at 711 East Washington Street, will host its 5th anniversary party from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

— Nevada State Parks to host Donovan Mill history hike from Dayton to Silver CityNevada State Park staff will host an April 13 guided hike from the Rock Point Mill at Dayton State Park to the historic Donovan Mill in Silver City, Nev.

— Saturday Easy Hike to V&T Railroad Grade hosted by Muscle PoweredPlease join Muscle Powered on Saturday, April 13 for an easy hike on a portion of the V&T Railroad Grade, northwest Carson City. Meet at the dirt parking lot opposite Murphy Drive on Combs Canyon parking area. Hike on a portion of the old V&T Railroad and enjoy fabulous views of Carson City and Eagle Valley. Hike distance will range between 2-4 miles, depending on trail condition.

— Carson City's Greenhouse Project springs into action Saturday with early season plant event The Greenhouse Project hosts its annual Early Spring Plant Sale, Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering an array of perennial and annual varieties ready to go into your garden.

— Carson City Parks and Rec to host Trash Dash Competition, prizes included On April 13 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. a Trash Dash Competition will be hosted by Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space, with prizes awarded in three categories. Participants must find as much trash as they can, but prizes will also be awarded to most interesting find, and largest item.

— WNC Continuing Education: My Thousand Word Book Sculpture - Workshop 5 Did you ever want to create really cool things out of books? Once read, they sit on a shelf and start to collect dust. Why not learn what Debbie and Rachael of “My Thousand Words” (see MyThousandWords.com) have created. They will be teaching you a few designs that they have made and sold in galleries throughout the northwest and across the country.

— Registration begins for 2nd Veteran Appreciation, Awareness Brunch at Governor's MansionNevada Rural Counties RSVP Program will host its second Reaching For Zero: A Veteran Appreciation and Veteran Suicide Prevention and Awareness Brunch on Saturday, April 13 at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City.

— Easter Bunny Pictures featured Saturday and Sunday at The Carson Mall With Easter a week away, the Easter Bunny will make an appearance at the Carson Mall in Carson City this Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14 and again on April 20. Precious Moments will be joining the craft show, as it hosts the Easter Bunny who will have a special prize for each child.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Spaghetti Feast & Raffle Carson City Moose Lodge No. 2709 and Women Of The Moose will be hosting a fundraiser to benefit the McKinney Foundation (Students In Transition) and the Children at Moose Heart.

— Easter egg hunts planned for downtown Carson City, railroad museum and aquatic center A number of Easter egg hunts are planned around the capital city beginning this weekend with the "Downtown EGGstravaganza" hosted by the Carson City Downtown Business Association.

— Kiwanis of Carson City hosts pasta feed Saturday to benefit Meals on Wheels The Kiwanis Club of Carson City is hosting its annual Pasta Feed to benefit Meals on Wheels Carson City this Saturday, April 13, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. Tickets are $6, and include pasta, garlic bread, salad, beverage and dessert. Kids under 5 eat free.

— Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra hosts Elegant Evening Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra is hosting their 30th annual Elegant Evening fund-raiser on Saturday, April 13th, 2019 at Harrah's Lake Tahoe. Guests will enjoy delicious food, wine, beer and vodka tastings, raffles plus dancing the night away enjoying live music with “The Soul Experience” featuring Trey Stone.

— Carson Valley Medical Center Hospital Foundation's 2nd Annual Blue Jean Ball Join us at the 2019 Blue Jean Ball, Carson Valley Medical Center Hospital Foundation’s second annual event to support local healthcare services in the Carson Valley. It will be an evening of a little bit of fundraising and a lot of fun!

— Dayton Valley Ducks Unlimited to host April 13 'Fire and Ice' raffleDayton Valley Ducks Unlimited presents a "Fire and Ice" firearm and cooler raffle event, Saturday, April 13 at Dayton Valley Country Club.

— Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. 5 to 6:30 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

— Paiute artist’s work displayed at Nevada Legislature. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Native American artist Melissa Melero-Moose finds inspiration for her mixed media creations from the landscape and culture of the Northern Paiute of the Great Basin.
“Willows, tules, cattails, and pine nuts are all very important staples to the Paiute people, being sources of food, shelter, and implements made with artistic intention,” she said. “I consider these works to be a perspective of my tribe and culture through the eyes of a Native woman, mother and artist.” Melero-Moose’s work is featured in the exhibit, “Translating Paiute,” which went on display Monday, April 8 at the Nevada Arts Council’s Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) Gallery inside the Nevada Legislative Building. 401 S Carson Street, Carson City.

Nevada Artists Association 'Spring has Sprung' show underway at the BAC in Carson City. 10 a.m. daily except Mondays. Come on in and enjoy browsing the new art in the "Spring has Sprung" show running now through May 3 at the Nevada Artists Association Carson City gallery located in the Brewery Arts Center. — Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: The Felt Works. Daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public Monday through Friday and will is on display now through May 3. Artist Svea Ferguson, based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, created her wall sculptures from common materials found primarily in domestic spaces. She uses vinyl and linoleum flooring materials designed to mimic the appearance of high-end options such as marble, granite, and hardwood at significantly lower costs. These flexible, faux veneers present physical qualities, which allow them to be easily manipulated by the hand, without the need for specialty tools or facilities. The CCAI Courthouse Gallery is located at 885 E Musser St., Carson City.

— Watercolor Exploration classes offered in March and April through WNC's Continuing Education. Whether you are a new or continuing watercolor student, learn to splash and play while discovering the expansive possibilities of watercolor at classes offered through Western Nevada College's Continuing Education program. In each 4-week class, we will explore several different approaches to watercolor. We will also investigate art fundamental topics concentrating on one topic per 4-week session. Students may choose their own subjects, with instructor input as to relevance based on individual skill level. Supplies require. Potential watercolor approaches include: wet-on-dry, wet-into-wet, watercolor pouring, wet-to-dry, layering, pulling-the-bead, alla prima painting, plein air and more. Potential fundamental topics include: color temperature, color value, compositional design, color harmony, drawing principles, avoiding common pitfalls, artwork presentation, painting from life, and more. — Carson City group offers support, education to parents with children who have addictions. 6 p.m. Tuesdays. A support group is restarting in Carson City for family members who have loved ones struggling with addictions. The group will meet at a new location on Tuesday nights, 6 p.m. at Partnership Carson City meeting room at 1925 N Carson St. PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones) is a support group of parents helping parents. We meet every week to offer education and support for parents or spouses dealing with an addicted family member. Although PAL has been informally in existence since 2006, we incorporated in Arizona as a non-profit in 2015 in order to help expand PAL nationally. PAL's vision is to make PAL meetings available at no charge to all parents and family members struggling with the addiction of a loved one. PAL is a faith-based Christian organization and our mission is to provide hope to families through education and support. — WNC's Carson City campus offers 8-week research-based stress reduction course. 6 p.m. Western Nevada College’s Continuing Education Department is proud to offer Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at its Carson City campus beginning Tuesday, March 26. This eight-week course uses 30 years of research to help participants develop more capacity to deal with short- and long-term stressors in their lives. The class will meet weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8, with an all-day retreat from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 4. The cost is $365. The tools offered in the course will teach students how to approach life with more composure, energy, understanding and enthusiasm, and can also help participants develop the ability to manage and reduce pain levels. Through weekly homework, students will improve their focus, resilience and capacity to recover more quickly from life’s challenges. The course is taught by Heather Haslem, a national board-certified health and wellness coach and qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher. — Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Friday, March 29, 5-7 p.m. in the Sierra Room, and the artist will give a brief talk about his photography at 5:30 p.m. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.

— Carson City kindergarten registration begins. The Carson City School District is asking parents to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2019, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2019-2020 school year. Full-day Kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools in Carson City.

— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself!
